AOL and Novell Jointly Develop 'instantme' Real Time Instant Messaging Tool

instantme Extends Reach of digitalme Users to AOL Instant Messenger Community

NEW YORK — Oct. 5, 1999 — Novell, Inc. (NASDAQ: NOVL) and America Online, Inc. (NYSE: AOL) today introduced 'instantme™,' a new communications tool that allows digitalme™ users to send instant messages to people listed in their digitalme dynamic address book and to the community of 45 million AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) users. In August, Novell and AOL announced an agreement to develop and distribute this co-branded instant messenger product to link users of its business solutions to other members of the AOL Instant Messenger community.

Through instantme, Novell users will be able to trade personalized and private online messages in real time with business associates as well as friends, family and other members of the AIM network. Through its usage of Novell's industry-leading directory service, Novell® Directory Services® (NDS®), and digitalme solution, instantme will allow business users to gain managed access to the 45 million members of the AIM community.

"Novell is proud to join with AOL to expand the use of popular instant messenger technologies to corporate enterprise end users," said Mike Sheridan, vice president for Strategic Business, Novell. "Since the Web has become such an integral part of our lives, Novell is building applications like instantme to make the Web experience as easy and convenient as possible. digitalme, powered by NDS technology, gives individuals the security and control they demand, while AIM offers Internet users the friendly and easy-to-use technology they've come to trust. instantme brings these two benefits together."

David Gang, AOL's senior vice president for Strategic Development, said, "Instant messaging is not only the fastest-growing and most exciting phenomenon on the Internet — it's incredible at enhancing productivity in the workplace by making communication faster and easier than ever before. We're delighted to join with Novell on instantme, which enables us to work together to build the world's leading instant messaging community both at home and in the workplace."
