National Public Radio Selects Novell Networking Solutions

Novell's BorderManager, NetWare and NDS for NT Enable NPR to Get the Best Performance from a Mixed-platform Network Environment

PROVO, Utah — Oct. 20, 1999 — Novell, Inc. today announced that National Public Radio® (NPR®), which produces and distributes award-winning programs such as Morning Edition®, All Things Considered® and NPR's Performance Today®, has selected directory-enabled Novell networking solutions to deliver better performance from their mixed-platform network environment. By integrating Novell® BorderManager™ Enterprise Edition 3.5, NetWare® 5 and Novell Directory Services® (NDS®) for NT 2.01 into its existing Microsoft NT network, NPR can take advantage of a scaleable, manageable and dependable network environment based on advanced directory technology.

NPR intends to improve Internet and Web performance and security by implementing Novell BorderManager Enterprise Edition 3.5, allowing employees to more securely share information between offices via the Internet. Specifically, remote users from NPR News bureaus worldwide will have the capability to access network resources more securely and cost-effectively with Novell's BorderManager Virtual Private Network (VPN) services. In addition NPR will use NDS for NT to reduce the cost and complexity of managing NT remote branch offices.

"We have more than 800 users throughout the organization, including employees in remote parts of the world," said Rodney Armstrong, manager of technical operations at NPR. "We will gain better control of our network by implementing a VPN created with Novell's BorderManager."

A Complete Networking Solution for Mixed Environments

NPR has selected three of Novell's key products:

  • NetWare 5 — Novell's NetWare 5 will add a pure Internet Protocol-based server operating system to NPR's existing Microsoft network, allowing the organization to combine the reliability and scalability of the traditional NetWare network with the open standards of the Internet. The combination of Novell's NetWare 5 and NDS for NT will decrease networking costs by centralizing the management of network applications.

  • NDS for NT 2.01 — By employing NDS for NT 2.01, NPR can easily add users to their multi-vendor network. The product will also increase productivity by eliminating redundant administrative tasks by reducing the time spent managing a mixed environment, thus lowering the total cost of network ownership.

  • BorderManager Enterprise Edition 3.5 — BorderManager increases productivity by accelerating Internet connections and reducing network bandwidth requirements. The Internet security management suite provides integrated firewall, VPN, authentication and caching services for networks leveraging NDS. BorderManager Enterprise Edition 3.5 allows remote dial-up users to seamlessly access network resources through a single sign-on feature, while the VPN helps to control excessive dial-up and T-1 costs.

"NPR is a prime example of an organization that will benefit from using Novell solutions to manage their mixed-platform networks more efficiently," said Ron Heinz, senior vice president of worldwide sales, Novell. "We are seeing a growing trend of mixed environments as companies bring together the best technologies to meet their business requirements. An advanced directory service, such as NDS, is the ideal technology to manage diverse applications and platforms."
