Novell Delivers Free Digital Certificate Server for E-Business

Novell Certificate Server 2.0 Helps Companies Protect Information and User Identity While Leveraging Directory Management Strengths of NDS

PROVO, Utah — Oct. 26, 1999 — With the goal of accelerating the adoption of e-business in customer networks, Novell, Inc. today announced Novell Certificate Server 2.0. This free enterprise software enables rapid expansion and growth of e-business by lowering the significant security hurdles of joining customers, suppliers and partners into a seamless network. Unlike other vendors who charge for issuing the digital certificates used to ensure secure communications, Novell offers a digital certificate solution based on need instead of cost. In addition, Novell Certificate is integrated with Novell Directory Services (NDS) to dramatically simplify management of digital certificates, including those issued by other vendors.

Digital certificates and underlying Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technology are critical components of the software infrastructure required to encrypt digital messages and support e-mail, financial transactions, and other secure transactions required for e-business. According to a recent Radicati Group report, the market for enterprise PKI security technology will expand from $269 million in 1999 to over $1 billion in 2003. The new Novell Certificate Server extends Novell PKI technology first shipped with Novell's NetWare 5 in 1998 and further strengthens Novell's directory-based platform for e-business.

Novell Certificate Server allows businesses to easily create, issue and manage digital certificates or "virtual fingerprints," from a single point of administration. Administrators can create as many as 30,000 certificates in an hour without requiring input from the end-user. This lowers training costs and speeds PKI deployment-a widely used system of using digital codes called "keys" to authenticate message creators and to encrypt message content. Users can securely download their individual digital certificate from anywhere on the network and then encrypt messages, guaranteeing only intended recipients can read those messages, as well as digitally sign messages so recipients can be assured they are in fact from the originator.

"Novell Certificate Server lets us concentrate on maximizing the benefits of electronic business with the assurance that information we send or receive is authentic, reliable and safely delivered," said Stan Levine, CEO of The Wiring Company, a firm specializing in application architecture. "By simplifying PKI management, Novell has made it easy for us to expand our Internet capabilities by enabling us to address our information security needs with minimal time and financial investment."

Leveraging NDS technology enables Certificate Server to support even the largest demands for digital signatures and ensures a higher level of security by storing the certificate data in a secure, central location in NDS that only the user can download. Certificate Server also enables network administrators to efficiently manage both in-house and third party digital certificates that companies may wish to purchase.

Developers can leverage Novell Certificate Server technology by obtaining the software developer kit (SDK) through Novell Developer Services. Software developers can also take advantage of NDS functionality to further enhance or customize their security solutions and easily build on the certificates issued by Novell Certificate Server without the need to re-write their own technology.

"To date, there have been significant barriers to adoption of certificates that have resulted from complex administration, poor interoperability and cost of issuance and maintenance of certificates," said Samm DiStasio, director of marketing for Novell. "Because Novell Certificate Server is free, customers can immediately implement and take advantage of the attributes and benefits of a certificate service without the cost-prohibitive penalties associated with traditional vendor offerings."
