Novell Integrates Internet Caching System with New Web Content Distribution Services

Novell Caching Technology to Feature Built-In Access to New Class of Value-Added Services

SAN JOSE, Calif. (ISPCON Fall '99) — October 26, 1999 — Novell Inc., today revealed new partnerships with Akamai Technologies and Edgix, Inc. that will make their Web content delivery services available to users of the Novell® Internet Caching System™. Software interfaces included in the Novell Internet Caching System 1.1 provide integration with this new class of services, which improve Internet response times by physically moving content closer to users and distributing it at different points in the Internet infrastructure.

"ISPs who are thinking about offering broadband services realize that it will only exacerbate Internet congestion and frustrate customers who have high service expectations," said Martin Jasinski, Vice President, Service Management of Edgix. "Edgix's content delivery service, HotMedia, which will be deployed in conjunction with the Novell Internet Caching System at ISP points of presence, will allow ISPs to enhance their customers' Internet experience dramatically while reducing their upstream bandwidth costs."

Caching is the process of storing frequently accessed Web pages and Internet content on local servers, speeding information access and lowering network telecommunications costs. Businesses of all sizes that are implementing caching can now benefit from further Internet performance enhancements through the integration of Web content delivery solutions.

Additionally, caching helps ensure a positive experience for customers visiting e-business Web sites by accelerating the performance of that site's Web servers. The Internet Research Group, the publishers of the 1999 Internet Caching Report, estimates that the caching market will reach nearly $2.2 billion by the year 2003.

"By providing a means for our Web content delivery partners to work with the Novell Internet Caching System, we are delivering the performance foundation necessary for value-added services," said Smita Deshpande, director of marketing, Novell, Inc. "With the continued adoption of our caching technology, Novell is focused on growing our eco-structure of Internet partners to create new e-Business revenue opportunities."
