Novell Appoints Carl S. Ledbetter as Senior Vice President, Business and Corporate Development

PROVO, Utah — Nov. 1, 1999 — Novell, Inc. today appointed Carl S. Ledbetter as senior vice president, Business and Corporate Development. Mr. Ledbetter joins Novell from Hybrid Networks, Inc., a leader and innovator in the wireless broadband industry, where he was chairman and chief executive officer. At Novell, he assumes responsibility for the company's directory-based business strategies, including software architecture, strategic partnerships and technology evangelism. Reporting directly to Novell Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt, he replaces Christopher Stone who resigned in October to found a startup company focused on directory-based e-business software.

Novell has established the foundation for directory-enabled networks and applications with Novell® Directory Services® (NDS®), its industry-leading software that simplifies the management and security of e-business spanning enterprise networks and the Internet. NDS, available across multiple platforms for use in heterogeneous networks, supports leading applications and Internet services while serving over 60 million users. Mr. Ledbetter will further develop and implement Novell's strategy to accelerate directory deployments through strategic partnerships, alliances, acquisitions and investments in companies worldwide that are leveraging NDS in e-business solutions.

"Carl brings to the Novell team the right vision and business acumen to accelerate Novell's momentum as a growth company," Schmidt said. "The explosion of e-business has produced an exciting spectrum of opportunities for NDS and Novell's expanding line of directory-based products and services. I have worked with Carl for eight years, beginning at Sun, and I know he will be a great asset for Novell."

"Novell is solidly positioned to become an indispensable part of the Internet infrastructure," Ledbetter said. "Eric Schmidt and the Novell team have completed the transition to a growth company and created one of the great opportunities in all of e-business. I'm delighted to be part of it, and I look forward to working with Eric to fully develop this opportunity through strategic planning and partnerships."

Mr. Ledbetter comes to Novell with over 20 years of technical and managerial experience in computers, networking and telecommunications. Prior to joining Hybrid in 1996, he was president of ATT Consumer Products, a $3 billion business that develops and markets telephones, cellular phones and other communications equipment. He has also held managerial and technical positions at Sun Microsystems, Decision Point Consulting, IBM, Prime Computer and Control Data Corporation.

Mr. Ledbetter holds a doctorate in mathematics from Clark University, a master's degree in mathematics from Brandeis University and a bachelor's degree from the University of Redlands.
