BT Selects Novell's Cross-platform Directory

UK Telecommunications Provider Signs World's Largest NDS for NT Deal

PROVO, Utah — Nov. 2, 1999 — BT, one of the world's largest telecommunications companies, has signed a new deal with Novell to deploy Novell® Directory Services® (NDS®) for NT to 90,000 users across the UK. The initial contract for 50,000 licenses of NDS for NT to be deployed immediately will be extended to 90,000 by May 2000. This will create the largest NDS for NT site in the world. NDS for NT will enable BT to manage its mixed Windows NT and NetWare® infrastructure from a single point of administration.

Organizations using NDS for NT can reduce administration and management costs of a mixed NDS/Windows NT domain environment by 40 percent and up to an additional 10 percent if used to consolidate Microsoft Exchange administration.

Key to BT's decision to select NDS as a key part of its IT infrastructure was NDS's proven scalability and availability on a variety of networking platforms. "BT's goal is to establish a multi-platform directory-enabled IT infrastructure," said Chris McGarr, infrastructure design manager for BT. "Businesses struggle with the limited domain directory of Windows NT 4.0. NDS for NT brings all the benefits of NDS to the Windows NT server and alleviates the issues of managing domains and trusts."

"We are impressed by Novell's cross-platform directory strategy, which will enable BT to bring other platforms such as Solaris and HP-UX into the directory-enabled network," said McGarr.

Novell is working closely with BT to add further value to their directory-based infrastructure. Areas that are being considered include single-sign-on, integrated security services, remote access and directory-enabled e-commerce.

Ben Bulpett, telecommunications business manager, Novell said, "Simplifying the management of network users, information, applications and network devices is what directory services are all about. But directory services must be cross platform. The alternative is numerous parallel directory services — each targeted at a specific environment — and all the redundant, costly and mind-numbing support that implies. NDS provides the only full-service cross-platform directory on the market today, and this announcement is recognition that Novell's cross-platform strategy is the right approach."

BT is currently in the process of migrating 360 NetWare 4.11 servers and 70,000 users to NetWare 5. This latest deal is expected to accelerate the migration due for completion in May 2000.
