Novell CEO Eric Schmidt to Deliver COMDEX Keynote Address on Expanding Role of Directory Services in the Internet, E-Business

Saturday Night Live Stars Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon to Join Novell in Taking Directory Services to "The Next Level"

PROVO, Utah — Nov. 4, 1999 — The fastest growing companies on the Internet — from dot-com innovators to click-and-mortar giants — are launching new applications and services based on powerful directory services software that makes e-business more manageable, personal and secure. The opportunity for these Internet companies to take their applications and services to "The Next Level" is the subject of a keynote address delivered by Novell Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt at Fall COMDEX '99, Nov. 16 at noon in the Ballroom of the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas.

To help celebrate the arrival of directory software in the mainstream of the Internet, comedians Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon, long-time regulars on NBC's Saturday Night Live, will join Novell on stage for a humorous look at e-business challenges and solutions.

Immediately following his keynote address, Schmidt will host a press conference to further outline Novell's e-business solutions and announce new directory technology that will extend Novell's networking leadership across new platforms and Internet markets. The press conference will be conducted in the Venetian Hotel at 1 p.m.

"I believe we will look back on this COMDEX keynote as the point in the history of networking when directory services became part of the Internet mainstream," said Dave Shirk, vice president of product marketing for Novell. "This promises to be the most entertaining presentation at COMDEX, featuring some very funny comedians, but also an important presentation for any business looking to capture the full value of e-business and the Internet."

Since joining Novell as chairman and CEO in April 1997, Schmidt has led a company turnaround and taken Novell into a new era as a growth company. Novell, during this period, has established the foundation for directory-enabled applications and services with Novell® Directory Services® (NDS®), its industry-leading software that simplifies the management and security of e-business spanning enterprise networks and the Internet. Having deployed NDS in customer businesses worldwide, Novell is now extending its scalable power to the Internet to support both business-to-business and business-to-consumer e-commerce.

Novell Connecting Points

While taking center stage in a COMDEX keynote address, Novell's directory technology is also prominent on the trade show floor. The official COMDEX network, the "COMDEX Intranet: Novell Connecting Points," will provide more than 230,000 attendees with services like free Internet access, e-mail, dial-up networking and Internet faxing. Based upon Novell software solutions like NDS 8, the NetWare® 5 intelligent network server platform, and GroupWise® 5.5 e-mail and collaboration, Novell Connecting Points (NCPs) showcases the ability of NDS to support secure, manageable mission-critical applications and services at a fraction of the cost of competing solutions.

This year's COMDEX Intranet will also be integrated with NetWare Cluster Services™, Novell's server clustering system that ensures high availability and manageability of critical network resources. Through NetWare Cluster Services, COMDEX attendees will have continual access to all Intranet resources, and administrators can maintain the entire system using 14 servers instead of the more than 40 servers used in previous COMDEX Intranets.
