New Breed of E-Business Players Align with Novell's NDS eDirectory

  • Platform-independent Directory Supports Today's Web-based Networks
  • Aggressive Pricing Promotes Easy Adoption of eDirectory
  • Internet Leaders CNN, Sun, Lucent, AltaVista Support Next-generation NDS

LAS VEGAS (Fall COMDEX '99) — Nov. 16, 1999 — Driving new business opportunities for companies on the Internet, Novell, Inc. today announced availability of Novell® Directory Services® (NDS®) eDirectory™ and NDS Corporate Edition™ software. Novell's next-generation directory services provide a software foundation for secure, scalable e-business applications and services that can be personalized to meet the needs and preferences of individual consumers and business users.

Toward this goal of customer empowerment and choice, Novell has configured the new NDS products in single packages supporting NetWare®, NT and Solaris servers. Novell will also add support for the Linux operating system, Compaq Tru64 and Windows 2000 in the first half of 2000. To speed wide-spread adoption, Novell is rolling out this technology with aggressive pricing and promotions. Now organizations of every kind can succeed on the Web without having to reinvent their businesses.

Internet leaders today voiced support for the new products, announcing e-business applications and services that utilize NDS eDirectory for Internet management and security (see today's related Novell release.) Companies announcing support for NDS eDirectory include leading Internet portals, popular Web sites, hardware and software developers, and providers of e-business services and support.

"Until now, many of the Internet's success stories have resulted from brand new companies building themselves in a 'dot-com' environment," said Eric Schmidt, Novell chairman and chief executive officer. "With NDS eDirectory, we are enabling the brick-and-mortar world of established, trusted businesses to evolve into 'click-and-mortar' organizations that thrive in this new economy. Profitable e-business is about finding and retaining loyal customers through customized, personal interactions that only directory-based solutions can effectively provide."

Products for 'Dot-Com' and Enterprise Environments

NDS eDirectory is tailored for "dot-com" environments where it simplifies Internet-based business relationships better than any other technology on the market. As infrastructure for high-volume Internet services, NDS eDirectory provides scalability to support millions or even billions of users. NDS eDirectory extends the market reach of dot-com leaders like CNN Interactive and AltaVista Company, while eliminating the barrier between the enterprise and the Internet for manufacturing companies like Xircom.

"CNN Web sites have served more than five billion page impressions so far this year, and we are confident that NDS eDirectory will help make each user's experience personal and secure," said Monty Mullig, vice president of CNN Internet technologies. "NDS eDirectory allows us to tailor content and services to the individual preferences of our users and gives us the speed and performance necessary for our online offerings."

NDS Corporate Edition is an application based on NDS eDirectory that simplifies network resource management inside the corporate firewall. NDS Corporate Edition integrates all corporate resources across the network by redirecting user account information stored in NT and Solaris into NDS, providing a single point of network administration.

Together, NDS eDirectory and NDS Corporate Edition help companies gain control of critical e-business processes. The combined directory solutions extend the reach of the existing computer networks to employees, customers and supply-chain partners from the internal network and across the Internet. With NDS Corporate Edition and NDS eDirectory, click-and-mortar companies have the opportunity to evolve their business to meet the demands of the Internet economy.

Enhances Leading Web Platforms

According to industry analyst reports, the majority of e-businesses run on NetWare, Microsoft Windows NT, Sun Solaris and/or Linux ¾ all of which will be compatible with NDS eDirectory. NDS eDirectory gives Solaris customers the scalability and mission-critical performance they have come to expect. NDS eDirectory running on Microsoft's projected Windows 2000 platform will provide customers the scalability and cross-platform support required to extend their networks beyond the enterprise and support high-volume Internet services.

"Directory services are critical to companies that need to manage increasingly complex e-business relationships with partners and customers," said Richard Villars, vice president of network software research at International Data Corp. "Businesses setting up e-business systems with personalization and mass customization, however, have made limited use of directories because they were restricted to a single platform or server approach. Products such as Novell's NDS eDirectory that deliver a distributed, cross-platform directory solution will play a vital role in the next generation of e-business offerings."

Standards-based

NDS eDirectory natively supports the directory standard Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) version 3 and is ideally suited to power LDAP-based software applications. Since eDirectory is standards based, it easily interoperates with existing technology investments, making the extension of business processes to the Internet faster and more economical.

Pricing and Availability

Licenses for NDS eDirectory are available today for $2 USD per user. Licenses for NDS Corporate Edition are also available today for $26 USD per user. Licenses for both products can be purchased from an authorized Novell reseller or by contacting Novell directly at (888) 321-4272 or http://www.shopnovell.com.

To reinforce Novell's commitment to cross-platform interoperability, the company will give a free 100-user license of NDS eDirectory to customers who purchase Microsoft Windows 2000 Server within 90 days of its release or Sun Solaris 7 before Jan. 31, 2000. For ISVs and developers, Novell is offering a free 100-user license copy of eDirectory aimed to foster development of directory-enabled applications and services. Customers who are currently using a competing LDAP directory can get matching user licenses for NDS eDirectory at no charge, and pay only for the maintenance fees (for upgrade protection).
