LAS VEGAS (Fall COMDEX '99) — Nov. 16, 1999 — Novell, Inc. today announced the availability of Novell® Net Publisher™, a cross-platform Web publishing solution that allows business users to control the creation, management and publication of their Web content. Novell Net Publisher utilizes Novell's newly announced NDS® eDirectory™ — the cross-platform directory that simplifies complex e-business relationships better that any other technology on the market.

Utilizing NDS eDirectory, Novell Net Publisher runs on NetWare® and Windows NT — giving users and administrators secure, manageable access to Web documents on heterogeneous business networks and the Internet. Novell Net Publisher reaches across corporate intranets and the Internet, providing a vital link between businesses and their customers and partners who want to use the Web as a primary channel for conducting e-business.

Novell Net Publisher makes Web publishing as easy as storing and updating documents in a folder on a local or network drive; and it can be accessed using any Web browser. Users need no knowledge of HTML or other specialized languages, they simply compose documents in their favorite applications — such as Microsoft Office2000 applications — and quickly post them to the Web. In addition, Novell Net Publisher augments the Web publishing capabilities of Office2000 with features such as full-text searching, automated document approval routing and enhanced security.

"Novell Net Publisher is an ideal business solution for companies that need to manage and share large amounts of Web content quickly and securely," said Dave Shirk, vice president of product marketing for Novell. "This is another in a continuing line of directory-enabled applications from Novell that allow businesses to take maximum advantage of all that a Web-based network has to offer."

Novell Net Publisher also reduces the workload on Web administrators by putting the every day access and maintenance of Web documents into the hands of the users — while still maintaining central management and control through NDS eDirectory. Novell Net Publisher users control who can view, edit and update documents they publish, allowing them to use the Web as a virtual storage medium for their business documents. This offload makes both users and administrators more productive and reduces Web administration costs.

Web Publishing and Document Management Made Easy
With Novell Net Publisher, users and administrators can:

  • Author files in any application, store the files in their native format (such as Word or Excel) for future modification and automatically convert them to HTML during publishing
  • Check out files, edit them in their native format and then check in the updated files
  • Assign style templates to control how files look when they are published
  • Control user access to folders and files from a central management location
  • Give end-users control of the folders and files they have ownership of
  • Choose the type of publishing approval model they want to use (for example, no approval required to publish or one or more approvals required to publish)
  • Assign different publishing approval models to different folders
  • Track the status of files they've submitted for publishing
  • Approve files submitted from folders for which they are the owners
