PROVO, Utah — Dec. 13, 1999 — Novell, Inc. today announced the pricing and availability for NetWare® 5.1, the next version of the company's flagship, directory-based server operating system. NetWare 5.1 will be widely available and begin shipping as expected in mid-January to distributors, resellers and customers. Novell's latest server operating system, previously code-named "Cobra," will allow customers to take greater advantage of the growing trend toward using open, Web-based e-business applications, as well as Web-based network management and resources. The list price for a server and five-user license is $1345.

With NetWare 5.1, Novell adds to its momentum as the broadest supplier of Web infrastructure software on the market. Beginning with NDS, the leading directory platform, Novell provides customers with a single buying decision for key Web infrastructure services that work together seamlessly in e-business solutions. NetWare 5.1 will enable customers to extend the reach of their existing computer networks across the Internet to employees, customers and supply-chain partners.

"Customers who are serious about using their networks for Web-based applications, directories and management will clearly benefit from NetWare 5.1," said Dave Shirk, vice president of product marketing and management at Novell. "NetWare 5.1 gets to the core of what CIOs are looking for from their networks — zero downtime, easier administration and management, and more resources for leveraging their Internet investment."

To further enhance NetWare 5.1 as a platform for developing Web-based applications, NetWare 5.1 includes both IBM WebSphere Application Server 3.0 Standard Edition and IBM WebSphere Studio 3.0 Entry Edition. Through this partnership with IBM, NetWare 5.1 customers are provided with the industry's leading Web application server and a complete, easy-to-use Web development tool set for creating and deploying dynamic Web-based applications. WebSphere Application Server 3.0 Standard Edition and Studio Entry Edition are part of the IBM WebSphere family of application servers and tools that provide NetWare 5.1 customers a growth path as their needs expand.

"The inclusion of IBM WebSphere for developing Web applications is very appealing to us," said Ward D. Cook, NetWare administrator for the Office of Information Technology at the University of Maryland. "Coupling file and print services with NetWare as a Web applications platform makes Novell and NetWare very strategic for us."

In addition, NetWare 5.1 includes a 5-user version of Oracle8i along with the Web development tool Oracle WebDB to help customers develop and publish Web-based applications requiring integration with a full-featured SQL database.

Support for Open, Internet Standards

Building on the support of pure IP in NetWare 5, NetWare 5.1 will continue to provide customers with a standards based approach to network computing. NetWare will natively support Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), the protocol that Web servers and Web browsers use to communicate with each other on the Internet. Supporting HTTP will allow customers to serve up files from Microsoft Office 2000 Web folders as well as apply security and manageability controls to Web services using Novell Directory Services.

NetWare and NDS eDirectory Extend NDS to the Internet

NetWare 5.1 also allows customers to take greater advantage of Novell ® Directory Services ® with Novell's NDS ® eDirectory ™ to help companies build and manage secure and customized relationships with customers and partners through the Web. Offering centralized administration and user/group profiling, NDS eDirectory makes it easy to securely and consistently make critical information available to the users and e-business applications that need it.

Novell's NDS eDirectory will help to personalize the customer's experience based on marketing data like customer demographics, buying patterns, customer transactions, product interest, satisfaction levels and product feedback. NDS eDirectory will also benefit customer extranets by allowing businesses to expose portions of their network resources over the Internet to specific business partners in order to facilitate collaboration and increased productivity.

In addition to NetWare, Novell currently offers NDS eDirectory on Windows NT Server and Solaris with support for Linux, Windows 2000 and Compaq Tru64 coming during the first half of 2000.

Dependable& Efficient Access to Business Networking Resources

In an effort to provide customers with more secure access and control to their corporate networks, NetWare 5.1 includes the NetWare Management Portal$#153. The browser-based portal provides secure access to allow administrators to manage and monitor several aspects of their network including NDS, server status, health, identification of server problems, and server setting configurations. The NetWare Management Portal gives network administrators access to their networks from anywhere in the world.
