Novell Canada and Dell Canada Provide Caching Servers in Support of CANARIE's CA*net 3 Initiative

TORONTO — Dec. 21, 1999 — Novell Canada Ltd. and Dell Canada have announced the contribution of three Internet caching systems to CANARIE Inc., Canada's advanced Internet development organization. The caching systems will be deployed on CA*net 3, the world's first national optical research and development Internet.

Together, the caching systems form a unique distributed caching resource that exploits the high bandwidth capacity of CA*net 3, enabling researchers to test advanced caching techniques and gather important data on usage, performance and reliability. Located at McGill University, University of Saskatchewan and Carleton University, the distributed caching resource will benefit researchers at all the universities and research institutions connected to CA*net 3.

The Novell® Internet Caching System™ — powered by Dell® is a scalable, plug-and-accelerate architecture that dramatically improves the speed and efficiency of delivering Internet content to employees, partners and customers within corporate intranets and extranets as well as across the Internet. The Novell Internet Caching System - powered by Dell, can increase the capacity of any Web server ten-fold. By storing frequently-accessed Web pages and Internet content on local servers, caching systems help accelerate the performance of e-business Web servers, speed information access and lower network telecommunications costs significantly.

"Through this contribution, Novell Canada and Dell Canada are jointly investing in CANARIE's important research mandate, enabling us to participate in shaping the future of the Internet," said Don Chapman, vice-president and general manager, Novell Canada Ltd. "By deploying the Internet caching systems on CA*net 3, researchers will have significantly expanded capabilities to collaborate on the development and testing of new applications and technologies, lifting research to new heights."

The Novell Internet Caching System, which is available for license by Intel architecture-based original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), runs on Dell's PowerEdge® line of network servers. Dell was the first company to license the Novell Internet Caching System, which is now endorsed as the premier caching solution by 16 other leading computer manufacturers. "The CA*net 3 network is an important element in maintaining Canada's global competitiveness and leadership in information technology," said Lawrence Pentland, president of Dell Canada. "We are pleased to be working with Novell and CANARIE to advance these research and development efforts."

"By committing resources to this project, Novell and Dell are making a valuable contribution to the development of advanced caching techniques that take full advantage of the speed of our CA*net 3 network," said Andrew Bjerring, president and CEO of CANARIE Inc. "Partnerships like these are the cornerstone of CANARIE's ability to lead and innovate in advanced networking."
