Toshiba Licenses Novell Internet Caching System to e-Business Performance Infrastructure

Toshiba and Novell Unite to Offer Customers Easy to Use Caching Appliance for Web Acceleration

PROVO, Utah — Dec. 22, 1999 — Novell Inc. today announced that Toshiba Corporation of Japan has licensed the Novell® Internet Caching System™ and will begin shipping a cache appliance, the Toshiba MAGNIA* CS10 Cache Server, in Japan in January 2000. Toshiba, a world leader in high technology, will target businesses of all sizes that are looking to accelerate Web performance and reduce Internet connection costs.

Toshiba's licensing of the Novell Internet Caching System adds to Novell's momentum as the broadest supplier of Web infrastructure products in the market. Beginning with Novell Directory Services® (NDS ®) the leading directory platform, Novell provides customers with a single buying decision for key Web infrastructure services that work together seamlessly in e-business solutions. Novell solutions enable customers to extend the reach of their existing computer networks across the Internet to employees, customers and supply-chain partners.

"As the demand for bandwidth continues to rise in conjunction with the growth of e-business, a robust, scalable, high performance caching solution is necessary to meet the needs of today's customers," said Ron Heinz, senior vice president, worldwide sales, Novell. "The combination of the Toshiba MAGNIA CS10 Cache Server and the Novell Internet Caching System provides a Web performance infrastructure and improves Internet response times to help ensure a positive e-business experience for customers."

Caching is the process of storing frequently accessed Web pages and Internet content on local servers, speeding information access and lowering network telecommunications costs. Caching helps ensure a positive experience for customers visiting e-business Web sites by accelerating the performance of that site's Web servers. The Internet Research Group, publishers of the 1999 Internet Caching Report, estimates that the worldwide caching market will reach nearly $2.2 billion by the year 2003.

The MAGNIA CS10 Cache Server is based on the open and robust Toshiba MAGNIA server series, and is integrated with the Novell Internet Caching System, the most widely used caching system today. Toshiba has optimized the Novell Internet Caching System and MAGNIA's hardware performance to accelerate Web access up to 25 times of normal Internet connections in Toshiba lab tests.

Toshiba is an integrated manufacturer of electrical and electronic products spanning information and communications, equipment and systems, electronic components and materials, power systems and industrial equipment and consumer. The MAGNIA CS10 Cache Server, targeted at the appliance server market, will help meet the demands of businesses through single purpose servers with specific functions. Toshiba will continue to meet the challenges of borderless operations and mega-competition and is resolved to remain at the cutting-edge of the world's electronics industry.
