SUSE invites High Schools Across the US to Participate In SUSE Free Linux
Program
OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA April 11, 2001 - Today, SUSE Linux announced SUSEs
Free Linux Program for US High Schools. Administrators, IT specialist or
teachers of computer science at secondary educational institutions are
invited to participate in the program immediately. The announcement is part
of an ongoing campaign to make open source computing the IT standard for
operating systems and applications worldwide. Initially, SUSE will sponsor
more than 2,000 boxes of SUSE Linux throughout US public and private high
schools.
Open Source computing operating systems and applications are built upon
contributions from thousands of individuals and companies around the world,
said Dirk Hohndel, president of the company's US operations. Having it in
high schools around the US, demonstrates the open source philosophy and show
students, teachers, administrators and IT specialist that they do not have
to be tied to expensive operating systems and ongoing costly upgrades. The
days of proprietary operating systems dominating the computing landscape are
limited and this program allows the world to see the changes taking place
today.
In addition, the company welcomes open source development companies to join
and support the SUSE Free Linux Program for US High Schools. Hundreds of
open source development companies have partnered with SUSE to provide Linux
applications and utilities. Their participation is expected to enhance the
program with a wide range of applications that can enhance productivity
within high school computing environments. SUSE Linux supports web servers,
local area networks, enterprise-level computing and personal computers. SuSE
encourages high schools to apply to the program by completing an email form
