SUSE Linux, the international technology leader and provider of Open Source solutions, announces the release of SUSE Linux 7.1 for the Sparc architecture of Sun Microsystems.
Oakland, CA 04/12/2001 OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA - April 12, 2001 - Today, SUSE Linux, the international
technology leader and provider of Open Source solutions, announced the
release of SUSE Linux 7.1 for the Sparc architecture of Sun Microsystems.
SUSE Linux 7.1 for Sparc comes with the proven Linux Kernel 2.2.18 as well
as the latest Kernel 2.4.2 as a special bonus for technophile users. SuSE
Linux 7.1 is based on the program library glibc 2.2. The popular SBUS
graphics cards are supported by XFree86 4.0.2.
The scope of applications with LFS (Large File Support) as well as the
number of applications that support IPv6 (Internet Protocol Version 6) has
grown. IPv6, which is gradually replacing IPv4, allows the use of additional
IP addresses and much more flexible routing. Further, individual program
packages can be installed with SUSE installation and administration tool,
YaST2, from CD-Rom or, a new feature, from an FTP server. RPMs with SuSE
GnuPG key provide additional security during system updates. The graphical
user interface KDE 2.0.1 ensures a maximum degree of user friendliness and
functionality.
SUSE Linux is the only operating system that supports the Sparc platform,
IA32, PowerPC, Alpha, and S/390 processors. SUSE Linux' compatibility and
availability across multiple platforms establishes itself as an advanced
operating system base with a high level of investment security, ideal for
the professional utilization in servers. SUSE Linux not only boasts
comprehensive network capabilities, stability, and flexibility, but it also
paves the way to a uniform and rational administration of heterogeneous
networks, regardless of the platform being used. Accordingly, development
and acquisition costs for strategic software products are minimal. The low
acquisition costs of the Linux operating system and the permanently reduced
administration expenditures contribute to considerable savings in the
operating costs for large server farms.
SUSE Linux 7.1 for Sparc (Item No. 99985-21SPC) is supplied on five CD-ROMs
with online documentation. It can be obtained exclusively directly from SuSE
at the price of USD 159. SUSE Linux 7.1 for Sparc is suitable for deployment
in 32-bit machines of the Sun4c and Sun4m series, as well as for 64-bit
machines of the Sun4u series. SUSE also offers installation and maintenance
support services subject to additional charges.
SUSE Linux 7.1 for Sparc is also available for download from
