San Ramon, California 01/10/2001 Tamino(TM), Software AG's native XML database, now runs on SUSE Linux AG's Linux Enterprise
Server for S/390.
Software AG has added mainframes to the growing list of Tamino-supported
platforms; IT professionals can now exploit XML for their existing
mainframe applications, equipping them for the world of e-business.
By combining Tamino's performance with Linux's stability, Software AG
and SUSE Linux AG have created an offering geared to enterprises who
want to exploit reliable mainframes for e-business. Linux offers very
high scalability not just to small- and medium-sized businesses, but
also to large-scale environments -- particularly with its expanded
network of distributors, including SuSE.
"We can look back on many years of successful cooperation with SUSE,"
said Schalk Viljoen, vice president of product marketing, Software AG.
"SUSE has extensive expertise in the area of Linux for Intel and Linux
for S/390. The positive experiences we have had with our joint projects
have proven we have made the right decision."
Software AG ported Tamino in just a few weeks, relying on support from
SUSE and IBM. The IBM S/390 mainframe can host up to 30,000 virtual
Linux servers concurrently, making SUSE Linux for S/390 mainframes the
operating system of choice for enterprise servers.
A Software AG Global Alliance Partner, SUSE Linux AG has been working
successfully with Software AG on the development, support and sale of
database products for several years.
"Thanks to Software AG's expertise in XML and its professional
cooperation, we have been able to produce a high-performance XML
platform," said Markus Kraft, head of development of SUSE Linux for
S/390, SuSE. "Tamino XML Database is the optimum choice for e-business
applications with very high transaction and access rates."
Tamino XML Database is the core of Software AG's Tamino XML Platform,
the first complete XML-based architecture for developing, processing and
storing documents in XML format.
Through its close cooperation with SUSE and IBM, Software AG is aiming
to provide broad support for open-source operating systems with its
products and services.
Tamino XML Database for SUSE Linux on S/390 is now available through
Software AG and its distributors. The cost of a Tamino XML Database
license is based on the customary price structure for mainframes and is
calculated according to the performance of the customer's installed
system. About Software AG Based in Darmstadt, Germany, Software AG is
