Leading telecommunications company Alcatel plans to install the new SAP application server on an IBM eServer zSeries running Linux
CeBIT, Hannover, Germany 03/13/2002 IBM® today announced plans to make the mySAP.com® e-business platform on
Linux® for the IBM eServer zSeriesTM generally available on May 31st, 2002.
By offering mySAP.com on Linux for eServer zSeries, IBM and SAP®
will provide customers with an open, fast, scalable, and reliable
e-business collaborative solution that can run natively, in an LPAR
(logical partition), or on z/VMTM. Linux on the eServer zSeries
mainframe also offers an ideal platform for server consolidation,
utilising the mainframe's ability to create as few as 20 and up to
thousands of virtual Linux servers on a single physical box, saving
customers substantially on energy, floor space, and maintenance
expense.
"The Linux installation on zSeries was simple and quick. Being
UNIX®-experienced, the installation of the SAP application server on
Linux was very straight forward. All our extensive performance tests
could be finished successfully and we were very pleased with the
performance results," said Burghart Pohler, manager of the Alcatel
data center of pilot customer Alcatel SEL AG. "We are planning to
use the SAP Application Server on Linux for zSeries in our
production environment as soon as possible as we expect high
performance, optimized hardware utilisation and easier systems
management with the new solution".
The solution integrates the SAP application server on 64-bit Linux for
eServer zSeries with the industry-leading DB2 Universal DatabaseTM
for z/OSTM and OS/390®. The database access performance is
significantly improved when the application server and database
server run on the same eServer zSeries system.
"Linux on the IBM eServer zSeries allows customers to consolidate
multiple SAP systems onto one hardware platform, thus simplifying
both systems and data management and allowing high-speed
database access," said Rich Lechner, vice president of sales and
marketing for IBM eServer zSeries worldwide. "mySAP.com and DB2,
with eServer zSeries at its core gives our customers more options in
taking advantage of the systems consolidation, superior reliability and
outstanding systems management characteristics of the IBM
eServer mainframe."
"Linux is the world's fastest growing operating system, and serves as
a high-powered platform that empowers our customers worldwide to
manage multiple SAP solutions in an open infrastructure", said
Stephan Rossius, vice president Global Partner Management at SAP
AG. "It meets fully the quality standards of SAP for use in a mission
critical environment. We are excited to work with IBM to deliver this
power and performance that our customers have to expect".
SUSE will fully support mySAP.com on Linux for zSeries with a
maintained 64-bit distribution of its SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 7,
one of the most advanced enterprise Linux computing systems today.
The SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 7 operating system is available
and certified across all IBM eServer hardware platforms.
