City of Jacksonville Turns to Novell Net Services Software

PROVO, Utah — May 11, 2001 — One of the nation's largest cities in area, the City of Jacksonville, Fla., is home to more 700,000 people. Companies expanding or relocating to Jacksonville have created more than 50,000 new jobs during the last five years. With this unprecedented growth, the City of Jacksonville found itself needing a networking solution that would support its 6,000 city employees spread across 37 remote sites throughout the city.

Using Novell's NetWare, eDirectory, ZENworks and BorderManager Enterprise Edition, the City of Jacksonville has tied together its 90 servers throughout the city with central network management. The City of Jacksonville is responsible for the courts, attorneys, libraries, public safety and public works, all running networks in separate locations. Novell's solution allowed the city government to move toward a completely integrated environment, enabling internal and external networks and the Internet to run together as one Net.

"We are constantly needing to service two customer bases at once: the internal service organization and the citizens of Jacksonville," said Sandy Bateh, chief administration officer for the information technology division of the City of Jacksonville. "Novell provided a solution that allowed us to meet the needs of both groups. The strength of the network is really in the directory. Everything from GroupWise to ZENworks snaps directly into it. In fact, the system is so integrated that when a computer virus brought down the majority of businesses in the area, the City of Jacksonville was one of the few organization to remain unaffected."

In addition, Bateh said GroupWise is one of the city's most indispensable tools. "We live and die by GroupWise. From the mayor's office straight down to every single city employee, we use it for everything: email, scheduling, calendaring and messaging."
