Novell's Net Services Software Tough Enough for Steel Maker Ellwood Group

PROVO, Utah —May 31, 2001— Since 1910 the Ellwood Group, Inc. has steadily grown its business producing high-quality steel and steel-related products. Founded in Ellwood City, Pa., the company today operates eight divisions at sites from Houston, Texas, to Seraing, Belgium. To support that kind of growth and widespread operations, the Ellwood Group turned to Novell Platinum Partner Viable Solutions and the power of Novell's Net services software to create a reliable, feature-rich network/communications infrastructure.

Under the expert direction of Viable Solutions, the Ellwood Group has used Novell Net services software like NetWare, GroupWise, eDirectory and BorderManager to create an extremely stable network that securely supports the needs of local and remote users. The access and reliability afforded by their Novell infrastructure has helped the Ellwood Group streamline business operations and lower costs, while still supporting the company's growth.

"Our business is extremely dependent on Novell's Net services software, GroupWise in particular," said Richard Owrey, Director of Systems, Ellwood Group, Inc. "Not only does GroupWise help us save time and increase productivity through features like shared calendars and integrated document management, but it also helps us support our mobile workforce. Our employees aren't tied to their desks and the corporate network to access important information; instead they can access the system through any Web browser via WebAccess or synch their information to a PDA.

"To be perfectly honest, competitive products like Exchange and Notes can't even touch what GroupWise does. We plan to upgrade to version 6 in the next few months and take advantage of new features like wireless access via the Palm."

The Ellwood Group also counts the reliability of NetWare as a key benefit of their Novell infrastructure. The non-stop network access provided by NetWare coupled with the centralized management offered by eDirectory allows the Ellwood Group to support their network infrastructure with a very limited IT staff.

"We literally just take NetWare for granted — it just works," Owrey said. "We commonly have NetWare servers up and running for a year at a time; whereas, we often have to reboot NT servers once every two weeks, and they're basically running one application."
