Novell's Net Services Software Improves Metro Sewer District's Productivity

PROVO, Utah —June 05, 2001— The State of Kentucky Metro Sewer District has tapped one of Novell's newest products, Novell OnDemand Services, to improve customer service and save costs. The Metro Sewer District runs Louisville's combined sanitary and storm sewer system and sanitary-only sewer system. It also oversees the community's Ohio River flood protection system, computerized mapping and geographical information system, and several other programs - including stream monitoring and hazardous materials control - designed to enhance and protect the environment.

The Metro Sewer District is using Novell technology to empower a mobile workforce. Their maintenance workers' handheld Windows CE devices are connected wirelessly to the corporate network to access custom customer service applications, maps and maintenance data inventory, and e-mail and general Internet apps. This allows workers to access and enter data into the system in real-time so records are accurate and timely and downtime is minimized. These applications run on multiple terminal servers and both Windows and Novell platforms.

The Metro Sewer District relies on a series of Novell products to run this operation, including NetWare, ZENworks, and BorderManager, but it is Novell OnDemand Services, which delivers the applications wirelessly to the handheld devices, that is strategic for the company.

The Metro Sewer Districts use of OnDemand illustrates how Novell's Net services software truly creates one Net, tying diverse operating systems and wired and wireless devices into a single, seamless network.

"I'm always looking at ways to improve productivity on our network, while lowering costs," said Dennis Corolla, Network Analyst, Metro Sewer. "Novell OnDemand Services does both - keeping our employees in the field connected all the time while reducing the complexity of managing remote applications and information. I'd recommend it for anyone who needs remote workers to have real time access to corporate applications."
