Novell Sponsors Three-Day Open Standards Workshop

  • Novell comes together with other directory vendors Computer Associates, Critical Path, IBM, iPlanet, Microsoft, OpenLDAP and Oracle and numerous LDAP application vendors to test LDAP-based interoperability
SAN JOSE, Calif. — July 13, 2001 — Novell, Inc., the leading provider of Net services software, today announced the completion of an extensive industry workshop designed to promote the use of open industry standards by testing the interoperability of software from leading directory and application vendors. The event, known as the "LDAP Plugfest," was hosted July 11-13 at Novell's San Jose campus and attended by directory vendors Novell, Computer Associates, Critical Path, IBM, iPlanet, Microsoft, OpenLDAP and Oracle, as well as numerous LDAP application vendors. The LDAP Plugfest, sponsored by The Open Group's Directory Interoperability Forum and hosted by Novell, represents one of the industry's first and most complete gatherings of directory and application vendors for the purpose of testing LDAP-based interoperability.

"The LDAP Plugfest is an excellent example of the kind of vendor cooperation needed to drive open standards and interoperability in the marketplace — which ultimately benefits IT customers who need to leverage and extend existing infrastructures," said Winston Bumpus, Novell's director of standards. "With so many companies claiming an emphasis on industry standards, we decided it was time to take a reality check to determine where the major players are and where we need to go. In that spirit, Novell approached The Open Group with the idea of not only testing the interoperability of LDAP directories but also the applications that run on those directories. The LDAP Plugfest is that reality check."

Throughout the three-day event, vendors tested their directory and application software for compatibility and adherence to the LDAP standard. First, server vendors provided operating versions of their latest directory products. Then, application vendors were given the opportunity to test their products against each of the eight directories. Following the testing, application vendors were encouraged to apply for the "Works With LDAP 2000" certification from The Open Group. Feedback from the event will also be used by the Directory Interoperability Forum to further their interoperability work.

A leader in promoting interoperability within multi-vendor environments, Novell is also supporting The Open Group's recently launched Works With LDAP program and has certified several Net services software products. By certifying NDS® eDirectory™, DirXML™, Novell eGuide and NDS eDirectory SDK, Novell is guaranteeing customers open standards-based products that are interoperable with leading software and technologies on the Net.
