Novell ZENworks for Desktops 3.0 to improve service delivery and optimize network management at Canada's 13th largest city

MARKHAM, Ontario — December 18, 2001 — Novell Canada, a leader in eBusiness solutions and Net services software, today announced it was selected by the City of Brampton to help roll out Windows* 2000 professional (W2K) to its network of 900 workstations and manage its computer network. ZENworks® for Desktops 3.0, a directory-enabled software that automates workstation management and application deployment, was chosen because it fulfilled the City's requirements of centralized administration, ease of use and cost savings. A joint effort by Novell and its Platinum Partner, Tenet Computer Group, the W2K deployment began in June 2001 and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2001.

The City of Brampton required a product that could easily install Windows 2000 professional and meet its needs for application upgrading and integration, maintenance and inventory management. After assessing a variety of different software on the market, the City of Brampton selected Novell® ZENworks for Desktops. Short for "Zero-effort Networking," ZENworks for Desktops provides standard and secure workstation software functionality for users, significantly reducing administrative costs and IT support complexity.

"ZENworks for Desktops has changed the way Brampton's IT department operates," said Jack Marsman, Manager, Infrastructure and Client Support, City of Brampton. "It has freed our team from time-consuming, repetitive maintenance tasks, allowing us to be more proactive and to focus on long-term, strategic enhancement-related projects. With ZENworks in place, we are equipped to quickly and easily conduct future workstation software deployment and patch-level upgrades."

The key ZENworks for Desktops feature that impressed the City of Brampton the most was its 'imaging' capability. It allows the IT department to manage or control any individual networked computer from a single, central location quickly and efficiently, rather than tending each workstation, a task that is both time-consuming and costly. Working from a central console also allows the 'imaging' solution to act as an effective tool to help IT administrators handle operating system migrations, restore desktop workstations and perform remote help-desk functionalities.

"What distinguishes Novell ZENworks from other products on the market was its 'imaging' functions and its ability to automatically install operating systems across the City's entire network," said Carlos Paz-Soldan, Vice President of Technology and Services, Tenet Computer Group. "Best of all, the City can use ZENworks for Desktops to manage a mixed environment."

The IT Department isn't the only one reaping the benefits of ZENworks. The productivity of city employees has also increased since they can now take advantage of the instant software upgrade capability as well as remote and centralized maintenance, significantly minimizing downtime and waiting period.

"We are delighted the City of Brampton has selected a proven Novell solution to meet its needs," said Don Chapman, Vice President and General Manager, Novell Canada. "Novell, through our ZENworks for Desktops software, has deployed more W2K applications to organizations and their employees than any other software providers, including Microsoft. We will continue to help companies and organizations of all sizes, with heterogeneous environments, to conduct software installation and workstation management in a cost-effective manner.

The City of Brampton currently uses Novell NetWare® and BorderManager® and plans to use ZENworks for Desktops to install any of these product upgrades as they become available.
