PROVO, Utah — Jan. 4, 2002 —Kiesel, Boucher & Larson, LLP, is a Beverly Hills, Calif.-based consumer law firm that has 21 employees, including seven attorneys. What the firm doesn't have, however, is an in-house IT department, meaning it needed a networking and collaboration solution able to run almost entirely by itself and that is versatile enough to accommodate the firm's growing mobile networking needs. Following its search for a powerful network that is easy to manage, Kiesel, Boucher & Larson, LLP, implemented a business solution that includes Novell's NetWare as the platform, GroupWise for collaboration and BorderManager for network security.

The integration of network services and GroupWise has redefined how the firm does business. The "hit the road" function in GroupWise is especially useful, as it lets an attorney save his or her e-mails to a laptop, which are then available locally wherever that user may travel. The firm also runs its entire practice through GroupWise document management. All briefs, faxes and other documents are indexed in the document library so the appropriate people within the firm have access to them. To protect its network, the firm runs BorderManager, securing remote access to sensitive data.

"Novell products have significantly impacted the way we communicate and do business every day," said Paul R. Kiesel, managing partner of Kiesel, Boucher & Larson, LLP. "The fact that we are always connected to network resources and are able to interact with clients and co-workers from any location has saved us significant time and money. Being a small business, we can't afford to waste time and resources on network maintenance and troubleshooting. The integration of NetWare, GroupWise and BorderManager gives us a solid solution that runs almost entirely on its own. Since NetWare is so versatile, it's also good to know we can easily expand the network as we continue to grow."
