Quebec-based hospitals save costs and resources with Novell NetWare 6 and ZENworks for Desktops 3

MARKHAM, Ontario - Jan. 29, 2002 - Novell, a leading provider of Net business solutions, announced today it was selected by Quebec-based Verdun Hospital Centre—Verdun Hospital and LaSalle Hospital—to manage the Centre's information technology (IT) network. The Centre selected Novell® NetWare® 6, Novell's premier platform for delivering Net services across all types of networks, storage platforms and client desktops, and ZENworks® for Desktops 3, a directory-enabled software that automates workstation management and application deployment, to meet its management needs and maximize its return on investment.

Created in 1996 as a result of the merger of Verdun Hospital and LaSalle Hospital, the Verdun Hospital Centre serves a large patient base in southwest Montreal. In April 2000, the Centre elected to return to independent service operation, yet maintain some consolidated operations, including IT.

The Centre is faced with the challenge of meeting the IT needs of two hospital centers located seven kilometres apart. NetWare and ZENworks for Desktops were selected for their ability to address the hospitals' need for managed connections and network access, a secure environment and remote management of information resources.

Anywhere Access with Unmatched Security

Novell NetWare 6 provides the IT team and users with continuous and secure access to all the hospitals' network resources, whether files, printers, directories, e-mail or databases, on a wide variety of networks, storage platforms, workstation or wireless Internet-based devices. Leveraging the powerful Novell eDirectory™, NetWare 6 possesses unmatched security that safeguards all of the hospitals' vital and sensitive network data.

"Novell's NetWare offers the features to ensure we provide the hospitals and our users with unparalleled advantages," said François Lemoyne, financial and information manager, Verdun Hospital Centre. "With NetWare 6, users can securely access information from anywhere. We don't have to rip-and-replace our current infrastructure to accommodate the new platform, and its scalability means it can grow as our needs do. We couldn't ask for more."

Remote Workstation Management Saves Costs and Resources

The Verdun Hospital Centre also required a solution to remotely manage workstations situated at two separate locations. By using ZENworks for Desktops, the IT team can monitor and deploy applications and manage all workstation profiles from a central point, allowing both hospitals to continue saving on IT expenditures.

Built on Novell's eDirectory technology, ZENworks for Desktops simplifies desktop management and securely extends networks by allowing administrators to centrally manage and personalize company desktops, including those of mobile users. With support for all Windows desktops, including Windows 2000, ZENworks for Desktops accelerates a company's transformation to eBusiness by allowing automated software distribution, remote desktop management and self-healing capabilities for applications.

"ZENworks for Desktops allows the Verdun Hospital Centre to reduce maintenance costs and increase the productivity of our IT team and employees," said Lemoyne. "Now our IT team can focus its attention on developing long-term projects instead of working on time-consuming, repetitive maintenance tasks. We can now maintain the current staffing levels of our IT team by reaping the benefits of ZENworks for Desktops."

"Novell is pleased the Verdun Hospital Centre is using our Net business solutions to address their IT needs and challenges," said Don Chapman, vice president and general manager, Novell Canada. "Our NetWare and ZENworks software will help the Centre improve its network management operations, accelerate its organizational responsiveness and achieve a fast return on its technology investments."

The Verdun Hospital Centre plans to deploy Novell SecureLogin so all hospital employees can access applications with a single log-in, thereby reducing password-related help desk calls and repetitive password administration tasks.
