05/31/2002Portrait Gerhard Burtscher "For SUSE UnitedLinux is especially key in the context of our extended enterprise focus, because it will expand our reach into markets where we are not active yet. As Europes Nr. 1 Linux distribution and North America's Nr. 2 we can now even better address our global customers needs.

We believe that UnitedLinux is good news for Industry Partners and Endusers. ISVs and IHVs can now concentrate their development and certification efforts on one single major business Linux distribution. Our Customers will benefit much faster from the latest ISVs and IHVs Technologies and will have a greater number of software and hardware solutions from what to choose.

Our Business customers will have ONE superior, certified Linux distribution in terms of quality, scalability and continuity that is tuned to businesses most pressing needs. Companies will have investment security through defined release cycles and maintenance services keeping their UnitedLinux solution for a guaranteed period on a stable, secure and tested state.

The UnitedLinux initiative will make Linux corporate computing a worldwide reality. Global accounts will welcome the availibility of one unified product combined with a set of services delivered either by the local linux player or a globally acting partner like IBM Global Services.

UnitedLinux based business solutions will be available for all IBM hardware architectures as well as for AMD and Intel 32- and 64-bit processors. For companies hosting complex IT infrastructures, this opens the door to the unprecedented perspective of spanning the entire hardware with a single powerful enterprise operating system.

The UnitedLinux engineering team encompasses resources from all four Linux companies. Within this Initiative SUSE performs the unique role of the product integrator. While all members jointly define the design of the product, SUSE engineering is responsible for the development and the quality assurance of the final product releases.

To sum it up: For SUSE this a great step into a new dimension of business. It allows us to keep delivering our Value Add from Engineering through Marketing, Sales, Professional Services and Support while expanding our reach to areas in the world where we are not present today. We are very much looking forward to work together with our partners towards a new dimension of Linux."
