MARKHAM, Ontario - Jan. 21, 2003 — Novell Canada today announced the University of Winnipeg has selected a Novell® exteNd™ solution to provide students with anywhere, anytime remote access to files, e-mail messages and school information. As part of the Novell exteNd Web application development suite, Novell's portal solution will ensure the university's 7,500 students have round-the-clock access to academic materials including laboratory reports and assignments as well as their e-mail accounts on Novell NetMail™, a standards-based messaging solution that provides e-mail, calendaring and schedule sharing across the Internet.

A longstanding Novell NetWare® and ZENworks® user, the University of Winnipeg will be improving their information technology (IT) infrastructure by implementing a series of Novell solutions. A two-phased undertaking, the IT upgrade includes establishing portals for students, faculty and staff members for anytime, anywhere information access; improving IT resource allocation and management; centralizing student registration and student account creation; populating portals with campus-wide information including examination schedules, course outline, library access, etc.; and establishing portal communities within the university for sharing information and communicating with other community members.

File Access at Student's Fingertips
Phase one started at the beginning of the 2002-2003 academic year when the University of Winnipeg rolled out the Novell exteNd portal solution to students. Leveraging the power of Novell eDirectory™, the portal solution provides each student with 20 megabytes of storage space for lab reports, assignments and e-mail messages. Using a single login, students can access their portal from any Web-enabled device, providing them anywhere, anytime access to their files and information even when they are off campus.

"Novell's portal solution provides University of Winnipeg students with consistent and secure access to some of the most important tools they need during their studies," said David Bell, assistant director, Network Services at the University of Winnipeg. "Our goal is to make learning easy and enjoyable for students. They can now conduct their course work at home, in the library or in the classroom."

In the near future, the university will extend the portal service to over 900 staff and faculty members who are currently using Novell GroupWise®.

Centralized Desktop and Application Management
The university's IT Team has also been using one of Novell's Nterprise™ solutions, Novell ZENworks for Desktops, a directory-enabled software that automates workstation management and application deployment, in the first phase to install new desktop applications for faculty members and manage various computer labs on campus. Over the past two months, six computer labs (140 PCs) have been upgraded.

One of the benefits of ZENworks is ease of management. The IT department can manage or control any individual networked computer from a single, central location quickly and efficiently, significantly saving time and resources. Working from a central console also enables IT administrators to handle operating system migrations, restore desktop workstations and perform remote help-desk functionalities.

"ZENworks has really made a positive difference to my IT Team," added Bell. "Tasks that used to take hours to accomplish are now completed in a few minutes. It allows us to concentrate on our long-term strategic goals and still provide a first-rate IT support to students, faculty and staff."

Improved Resource Allocation
In order to increase computer terminal utilization in university labs, the IT team is working to provide students with access to their own accounts and "unique view" at the desktop level from any computer in any lab on campus. In the future, this will allow students to log into any lab on campus and have their user profile follow them. This enhancement will help improve IT resource utilization, allocation and management.

In order to increase efficiency and timeliness of student record management, the Student Information Service team is also in the process of integrating student registration with student account creation using Novell Nsure™ component, Novell eDirectory.

"Novell is delighted to work with Canadian universities of all sizes to provide students and faculty with IT solutions they need to effectively complete their scholastic studies and work," said Don Chapman, Vice President and General Manager, Novell Canada. "University of Winnipeg envisions all networks and resources will be integrated as one.

We are confident our comprehensive, open solutions will be able to help make the university's 'one Net' vision a reality."
