PROVO, Utah - March 17, 2003 — With more than 3,000 students, 500 faculty and staff, and limited IT budget and personnel, Benedict College needed a reliable network solution that would greatly improve communications among its students and faculty. The largest private college in South Carolina selected a comprehensive Novell Nsure and Nterprise solution featuring secure, remote access to a standardized e-mail system, college applications, resources and information through a new portal powered by Novell.

"We wanted a comprehensive, reliable solution that would provide a solid foundation and serve us well into the future," said Katrina Damon, network administrator at Benedict College. "We also have a small IT staff, so Novell's consistent support and services are extremely important to us."

Benedict College implemented an Nsure secure identity management solution to safeguard college data and protect student privacy. The college's user profiles are now managed through a single, secure directory, which is tied into other administrative systems and updates user information across applications. Nsure has already saved the college's IT staff more than 80 hours of manually updating student profiles. Benedict also realizes significant time and cost savings with Novell ZENworks for Desktops, which streamlines the management of the college's 28 computer labs across campus.

With a single ID and password, students can log into the college's portal where they can access their Novell NetMail accounts, receive information from advisors, and in the future, will be able to obtain transcripts and review course schedules. Benedict College plans to use the portal to allow teachers to track attendance, assign grades and access library resources. With a secure college portal for easy access to e-mail and other college applications, Benedict College has improved the communication among its students and staff, which is expected to dramatically reduce printing and mailing costs.

"With limited resources and a small staff, we had to do everything right the first time," said Robert Squirewell, director of Management Information Systems at Benedict College. "With Novell's proven efficiency and cost-effectiveness, we have created a solid foundation to do even greater things in the future. Working with the right solution makes all the difference."
