PROVO, Utah Sept. 12, 2003 — Novell today announced the availability of iSCSI support for Novell NetWare 5.1 and NetWare 6 customers, which will allow them to set up storage area networks (SANs) using standard Ethernet equipment and off-the-shelf servers rather than expensive fibre channel infrastructure. Also built into the recently released NetWare 6.5, iSCSI is a new Internet standard that defines how industry-standard SCSI (small computer systems interface) storage protocols are run over industry standard TCP/IP.

iSCSI in NetWare brings disaster recovery capabilities to organizations of all sizes, using lower cost Intel-based hardware and Ethernet connections. Traditional SANs cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in hardware, software, management and training. iSCSI on Gigabit Ethernet hardware is a fraction of the cost of a full fibre channel SAN solution, up to 10 times less expensive for the same amount of storage.

"With iSCSI support in NetWare, we can create a robust storage management solution at half the cost," said Doug Boval, systems engineer at St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital. "Novell is keeping up with the latest technology which translates into tremendous cost savings for us."

Customers are finding many uses for iSCSI in the enterprise such as data migration, including direct-attached-storage-to-SAN migration and site-to-site migration; distance replication, including disaster recovery and geographic data caching; serverless backup; and low-cost clusters. iSCSI in NetWare supports up to 32-node server clusters.
