07/04/2003 Samba is an Open Source program package that provides file and print
services for Windows clients under Linux. The first beta version of Samba
3.0 was released for testing earlier this month.
SUSE's Premium Business Partner SerNet strongly contributes to the
further development of the Samba project. Thanks to the close collaboration
between SUSE and SerNet, SUSE Linux users can already benefit today
from the important functional enhancements of Samba 3.0 on one of the
stable Samba 2.2 versions.
That is possible because SerNet ported a significant improvement for the
connection of Windows XP clients back to Samba 2.2.x. Amongst other
things, this feature makes sure that the authentication of a MS Windows
XP client with a Samba server does not require any additional
modifications on the client system. Previously, this process required
manual editing of the registry of all XP clients.
