10/28/2004 Frankfurt, Germany, Oct 28, 2004 - The annual Linux New Media Awards at LinuxWorld Conference & Expo in Frankfurt, Germany, awarded Novell's all-in-one offering for Linux users, SUSE Linux, the "Best Distribution for Beginners", with more than 47% of the votes ahead of RedHat's Fedora and MandrakeLinux.
This year, a total of 72 projects and organizations were submitted to ten categories, which were voted on by an international top-class jury. Included in the approximately 100 members of the jury were open source personalities, as well as some of the industry's leading IT managers, and Linux authors.
Winners of the other categories were:
- Favorite Notebook Vendor: IBM
- Best Free Project for Hardware Support: X.org
- Linux Friendliest Printer Vendor: HP
- Best Newcomer Linux Distribution: SkoleLinux
- Best Multimedia Framework: Jack
- Best Media Player: Mplayer
- Best Mail Client: KMail, Mutt (same number of votes)
- Best Database System: PostgreSQL
The Special Award for outstanding promotion of Linux and Open Source went
to Eurolinux/FFII.
