Chapter 6 Error Messages
This page documents many of the error messages that might appear during your SilverStream session. Where appropriate, solutions are provided. The messages are listed alphabetically.
A page named name already exists on the server. Overwrite?
- Description. The name that you gave your new page already exists on the current server.
- Solution. Answer Yes to overwrite the existing file or No to save the page with a different name.
An error occurred while reading filename
- Description. SilverStream was unable to read the file due to an unspecified error.
- Solution. Check to see if the file has been corrupted.
The attribute (attribute) cannot be modified here. It is handled directly by the Property Inspector and can be modified there.
- Description. This message appears when you try to modify a page attribute without using the Property Inspector.
- Solution. Access the Property Inspector for the attribute specified in the message. You can access the Property Inspector by either selecting the Property Inspector icon from the Page Designer toolbar, selecting it from the View menu, or highlighting the element that you want to modify and double-clicking.
The attribute name must be supplied
- Description. You selected Extended Attributes in the Property Inspector for the page. You added a value and selected OK without giving the new attribute a name.
- Solution. Enter a name for the attribute in the Name field of the Extended Attribute dialog.
Cannot write to the file filename because it is write-protected
- Description. SilverStream was unable to write to the specified file because the file is write-protected.
- Solution. Change the permissions for your file by selecting the file and choosing Properties from the File menu. Change your file's Attributes from read-only to read/write.
Can't set a property whose value is an expression
- Description. In calling the
setProperty()
method on a data control (such as AgcData), you specified a column whose value is an expression. You cannot modify this column.
- Solution. None
Could not load image at URL: x
- Description. You are not able to download the image at the specified URL. This could be because it was not found or because the network server is not responding.
- Solution. Verify the correct URL and try to load the image again.
Error encountered during database update
- Description. An error occurred while saving data to the database.
- Solution. Check to see if the server is running. You should also check your network connection.
Error encountered retrieving data from the server
- Description. An error has occurred while SilverStream was trying to get data from the server. It could mean that the connection between the client and the server has been interrupted.
- Solution. Try reconnecting to the server. Check with your System Administrator to make sure that the server is still functioning correctly.
Exception encountered retrieving error information from the server
- Description. A Java exception was thrown while SilverStream was trying to retrieve information from the server.
- Solution. Make sure the server is working and you can still establish a network connection to it.
Error loading form from server
- Description. SilverStream is unable to retrieve the form you specified from the server. This could be because the form you specified is out of date or corrupted in some way or it could be because the connection between the client and the server has been temporarily interrupted.
- Solution. If you are using the form as a subform or a dialog try re-saving it from the Form Designer. Make sure the server is up and that you still have your network connection.
Inappropriate call
- Description. While creating Java code using the Programming Editor for a control or button you made an invalid method call.
- Solution. Check your Java code carefully and make any corrections necessary.
Invalid argument
- Description. You called a method with an argument that is out of range or otherwise not allowed.
- Solution. Check your source code and verify that your method calls follow the guidelines specified in the API.
Invalid URL: x
- Description. The URL you specified is invalid.
- Solution. Correct the URL.
Local file access denied. To use this feature, you must configure your browser to allow this application access to your hard disk.
- Description. You tried to use your browser to access a file without the appropriate permission.
- Solution. Reconfigure your browser to allow untested applets access to your local disk or run the form in SilverJRunner instead of in the browser.
Missing query
- Description. An internal error occurred in a file attachment control.
- Solution. Verify that the table column that is bound to the control exists.
The name name cannot be used because it is already in use. Please try again.
- Description. You tried to give your event or control a name that is already being used in the current form, view, agent, etc.
- Solution. Specify a different name for the event or control.
The name name cannot be used because it is blank. Please try again.
- Description. You tried to save a control, event, etc., without first specifying a name for it.
- Solution. Specify a name.
The name name cannot be used because it contains invalid characters. The name may contain only letters, numbers, and underscores. Please try again.
- Description. The name you gave to the control or event contains invalid characters.
- Solution. Save the control or event with a new name that does not contain invalid characters.
The name name cannot be used because it is invalid. Please try again.
- Description. You specified an invalid name for your control or event.
- Solution. Choose another name for the control or event. Check it carefully to make sure that it does not contain any invalid characters.
The name name cannot be used because it is a reserved Java word. Please try again.
- Description. You tried to save your event or control using a Java reserved word as the name.
- Solution. Resave your event or control with a new name. Before you try to save, check and make sure that the new name is not also a reserved word. For more information, see

The name name cannot be used because it starts with a number. Please try again.
- Description. Names for events, controls, etc. cannot start with a number.
- Solution. Enter a new name that starts with an upper or lowercase letter or an underscore character (_).
The name "name" cannot be used because names cannot contain "character." Please try again.
- Description. The name you tried to give the specified control, event, etc., contains an invalid character or characters. Names for events and controls can only contain numbers, letters, and underscore characters.
- Solution. Re-enter the name using only valid characters.
Page already exists
- Description. You created a page in the Page Designer and gave it a name that already exists in the database.
- Solution. Choose another name for your page.
The page pagename has changed on this server since being opened. Overwrite the version on the server with your changes?
- Description. Another user saved a version of the page since you opened it in the Page Designer.
- Solution. To exit without saving your changes or to save the modified page under a new name, answer No. If you answer Yes, the other user's changes are discarded.
Server not responding. Please try again
- Description. The connection between the client and the server has been broken.
- Solution. Retry the operation.
String not found
- Description. The character string you are searching for does not exist.
- Solution. None
Unable to add database. Failure code 500 on http://localhost/dbname/. The server was unable to create the new database. java.sql.SQLException:ORA-12154:TNS:could not resolve service name
- Description. You installed the SilverStream Driver for Oracle and attempted to add a database using the SilverStream Add Database command. When the Add Database dialog box appeared, you incorrectly entered information into the JDBC URL field.
- Solution. Press OK to return to the Add Database dialog box and re-enter the information correctly.
Unable to add database. Failure code 500 on http://localhost/dbname/. The server was unable to create the new database. Exception while creating SilverStream System tables in dbname: com.sssw.srv.dbutil.JDBCDriverNotFound: Could not find JDBC driver: com.sssw.jdbc.oracle.driver
- Description. You installed the SilverStream driver for Oracle and are trying to add a database using the SilverStream Add Database command. This message appears when you enter a typographical error or use the wrong case when you enter the names in the JDBC Driver and JDBC URL fields.
- Solution. Press OK to return to the Add Database dialog box. Re-enter the information correctly.
Unable to run agent
- Description. SilverStream is unable to run the agent you specified.
- Solution. Make sure the agent was saved without errors and that the server and the network are working correctly.
Unsupported Operation
- Description. You tried to call a method from an object that does not support it.
- Solution. None
Validation Failed
- Description. You tried to enter data in a form field that does not meet the field's validation rules.
- Solution. Enter another value in the field.
The value cannot be greater than x
- Description. You tried to enter a value greater than the maximum specified in the control's properties.
- Solution. Enter a value that is less than that specified in the message.
The value cannot be less than x
- Description. You tried to enter a value less than the minimum specified in the control's properties.
- Solution. Enter a value greater than that specified in the message.
Warning: SilverStream will attempt to delete the file filename on your local disk
- Description. You are running a form that attempts to delete a file on the local disk. Select OK to allow this operation or select Cancel to deny it.
- Solution. None. This message is only a warning.
Warning: SilverStream will attempt to launch a local editor for the file filename on your local drive
- Description. You are running a form that attempts to open an editor for a file on your local drive. Select OK to allow this operation. Select Cancel to deny it.
- Solution. None. This message is only a warning.
Warning: SilverStream will attempt to read and then delete the file filename on your local disk
- Description. You are running a form that attempts to read and then delete a file on your local drive. Select OK to allow this operation. Select Cancel to deny it.
- Solution. None. This message is only a warning.
Warning: SilverStream will attempt to read the file filename on your local disk
- Description. You are running a form that attempts to read a file on the local disk. Select OK to allow this operation or select Cancel to deny it.
- Solution. None. This message is only a warning.
