Meeting System and Software Requirements
System requirements vary according to you deployment needs. The following table can help you meet your deployment requirements.
NetWare Only System Requirements
Novell Small Business Suite 6.6 will run on the minimum system requirements listed below. For optimal performance, the computer should meet the recommended requirements.
Minimum Requirements
- A server-class PC with a Pentium* II or AMD* K7 processor
- 512 MB of RAM
- A Super VGA display adapter
- A DOS partition of at least 200 MB and 200 MB available space
- 2 GB of available, unpartitioned disk space outside the DOS partition for volume sys:
- One network board
- A bootable CD drive that supports the El Torito specification
Recommended Requirements
- A server-class PC with two-way Pentium III 700 MHz or higher processors
- 1 GB of RAM
Some Novell Small Business Suite 6.6 installation options (patterned deployments) have specific processor and RAM requirements. For these requirements, see Choosing a Server Pattern.
- A VESA-compliant 1.2 or later display adapter
- A DOS partition with 1 GB of available space
To determine the optimal size of a boot partition, add the amount of server memory to the minimum amount of the available disk space. The minimum amount of available space is 200 MB, so a server with 1024 MB RAM has an optimal boot partition of 1224 MB (1024 MB + 200 MB = 1224 MB). This size will allow you to do a core dump to the disk drive if required.
- 10 GB of available, unpartitioned disk space outside the DOS partition for volume sys:
- One or more network boards
- A bootable CD drive that supports the El Torito specification
- A USB or PS/2 mouse
NetWare and GroupWise Recommended System Requirements
For optimal performance, the computer should meet the following recommended requirements for running NetWare and GroupWise® on the same server.
- A server-class PC with two-way Pentium III 700 MHz or higher processors
- One or more network boards
- A bootable CD drive that supports the El Torito specification
- A USB or PS/2 mouse
- A VESA-compliant 1.2 or later display adapter
- 1 GB of RAM
- A DOS partition with 1 GB of available space
To determine the optimal size of a boot partition, add the amount of server memory to the minimum amount of the available disk space. The minimum amount of available space is 200 MB, so a server with 1024 MB RAM has an optimal boot partition of 1224 MB (1024 MB + 200 MB = 1224 MB). This size will allow you to do a core dump to the disk drive if required.
- 10 GB of available, unpartitioned disk space outside the DOS partition for volume sys:
- 2 GB of disk space for GroupWise files and the following directories:
The GroupWise and Messenger File Copy requires approximately 959 MB. This component is used by both of the Small Business patterns.
The GroupWise Installation creates the following directories and uses the following amounts of disk space:
Software Distribution directory |
500 MB |
Domain directory |
10 MB |
Post Office directory |
10 MB disk space per user and disk space as needed for library documents |
Agents - NetWare (MTA and POA) = 21 MB
- GroupWise Monitor (140 MB), GroupWise Web Access (215 MB), shared (110 MB) = 244
- GroupWise Internet Agent (GWIA) =37 MB
- Messenger Agents for NetWare = 8 MB
|
300 MB |
Total |
1810 MB |
NetWare and BorderManager Recommended System Requirements
For optimal performance, the computer should meet the following recommended requirements for running NetWare and BorderManager® on the same server.
The minimum amount of available space is 250 MB, so a server with 1024 MB RAM has an optimal boot partition of 1274 MB (1024 MB + 250 MB = 1274 MB). This size will allow you to do a core dump to the disk drive if required.
- 10 GB of available, unpartitioned disk space outside the DOS partition for volume sys:
- Minimum 2 GB dedicated CACHE volume if you are installing Proxy Caching. The volume must be a traditional volume.
NetWare and ZENworks Desktop Management Recommended System Requirements
For optimal performance, the computer should meet the following recommended requirements for running NetWare and ZENworks® Desktop Management on the same server.
- A server-class PC with two-way Pentium III 700 MHz or higher processors
- One or more network boards
- A bootable CD drive that supports the El Torito specification
- A USB or PS/2 mouse
- A VESA-compliant 1.2 or later display adapter

The minimum amount of available space is 200 MB, so a server with 1024 MB RAM has an optimal boot partition of 1224 MB (1024 MB + 200 MB = 1224 MB). This size will allow you to do a core dump to the disk drive if required.
- 10 GB of available, unpartitioned disk space outside the DOS partition for volume sys:
- 290 MB of free space for ZENworks
