Novell Consulting recommends the use of the Linux Volume Manager LVM for the system partitions (except /boot) and the data partition that accommodates the AutoYaST server. The following minimum partition layout is suggested:

The server should be installed with a minimal software selection only. Therefore, the Minimal pattern must be chosen during installation.
In addition, the apache2 package with all its dependencies must be installed. The cdrkit-cdrtools-compat package is required if the repository server is also used to create and maintain the boot media.
All other configurations of the operating system are kept at their default settings. You must ensure that the required ports (usually port 80) are not blocked by any firewall mechanism. The server should get a DNS entry following the local naming standard. In addition, a reverse lookup entry must be created in the customer's Domain Name Service.
