Meeting Server Inventory Requirements

Make sure that all the recommended common hardware and software requirements listed in Meeting Basic ZfS Installation Requirements are met.

In addition to the basic ZfS installation requirements, the requirements listed for the following Server Inventory components must be met:

Inventory Server Requirements

You can install the Inventory server on NetWare 5.1/6 or Windows NT/2000 servers.

IMPORTANT:  NetWare 4.x, NetWare 5.0, Linux*, and Solaris* are not supported for the Inventory server.

The NetWare servers where you install the Inventory server must meet the following minimum system requirements:

IMPORTANT:  For Windows servers, the server's DNS short name must be the same as the server's name. Either rename Windows servers where the server's name does not match its DNS short name before running the installation, or do not select these servers for installing Server Inventory.

Database Server Requirements

NOTE:  Inventory database files should not be installed on an NFS-mounted volume of a NetWare server.

Component Minimum Hardware and Software Requirements

Database Requirements

Sybase is installed automatically when you choose to install the inventory database. (See Determining and Preparing the Database Server.)

  • Sybase ASA 7.0.2.1583 on NetWare 5.x or 6 (do not locate the database file on NFS-mounted volumes)
  • Sybase ASA 7.0.2.1540 on Windows NT/2000
  • Sybase ASA 7.0.2.1540 on Linux or Solaris

Oracle can be used as an alternative to Sybase. See "Setting Up the Inventory Database for Oracle" in "Setting Up Server Inventory" in the Administration guide.

  • Oracle* version 8i on NetWare 5.x, Windows NT/2000, Solaris, Linux, or MS SQL 2002 servers.

RAM Requirements

  • Recommended minimum memory on the database is 256 MB with minimum cache size of 32 MB
  • 512 MB or higher is recommended at the Root Server level with a cache size of 256 MB

Hard Disk Requirements

  • Recommended minimum hard disk space on a lowest level server with 1,000 servers is 200 MB.
  • The minimum hard disk space on the topmost level server (Root Server) is 2 GB.

Inventoried Server Requirements

You can install the Inventory Agent on NetWare 5.1/6 or Windows NT/2000 servers.

IMPORTANT:  NetWare 4.x, NetWare 5.0, Linux, and Solaris are not supported for the Inventoried server.
