4.2 Downloading and Starting the Virtual Machines

IMPORTANT:There are two things you must understand about the downloadable end-user exercise VM files.

  • The instructions in this section only apply to Path 2. If you are following Paths 1 or 3, you have already prepared the virtual machines for the exercises in this section. Therefore, you should not complete the steps below. Instead, skip to Section 4.4, Accessing Filr to Do the Filr End User Exercises.

  • The downloadable end-user exercise VM files are not configured with an email address for user red. This means that if you are following Path 2 and you want to do the optional email exercises, you must complete the instructions in Section 3.10, (Optional) Setting Up Email Communication with the Filr VM after downloading the end-user exercise VM files and completing the steps below.

Of course, if you aren’t interested in the email exercises, setting up email communication is not needed.

Download the pre-configured virtual appliances by doing the following:

  1. If you haven’t already downloaded the software for Path 1, review and follow the instructions in Section 2.0, System Requirements.

  2. After the zip file is downloaded, extract the files and folders to where you want to run them in VMware.

  3. Start your chosen VMware platform and open the OES-11 VM (oes-11.vmx).

  4. Open the Filr VM (filr.vmx).

  5. Select the oes-11 tab, click Edit Virtual Machine Settings, click Network Adapter, select Bridged and the Replicate physical network connection state option, then click OK.

  6. Repeat Step 5 for the Filr VM.

  7. Start the pre-configured VMs by doing the following:

    1. Select the oes-11 tab, then click Power on this virtual machine.

    2. When VMware asks whether the VM was moved or copied, select I moved it.

    3. After the OES server VM has started up, select the Filr VM, then click Power on this virtual machine.

    4. When VMware asks whether the VM was moved or copied, select I moved it.

  8. When both VMs are running, continue with Connecting to the Wireless Router.
