Novell® BorderManager Family of Products Makes Remote Access Secure for
Customers
BorderManager Authentication Service builds on RADIUS Service now
available
NEW YORK CITY, New York -- September 17, 1997 -- Novell Inc., today
announced
BorderManager Authentication Service, a new member of the BorderManager product family that
allows
companies to use the industry's dominant directory service, Novell Directory Services
(NDS) to securely and efficiently manage remote access at the network border.
BorderManager
Authentication Service gives organizations easy, secure, and central control of access to their
networks,
dramatically reducing the costs of providing remote access to regional offices, branch locations,
mobile
users, and telecommuters. In addition, the new Novell solution enables organizations to further
reduce
connectivity costs by outsourcing their remote access infrastructure to an Internet Service
Provider (ISP)
while maintaining user control locally in NDS.
BorderManager Authentication Service is based upon RADIUS Services for NDS, which is now
available
free of charge from Novell's web site. These authentication services complement the firewall
features of the
BorderManager product family by extending the management and security capabilities of NDS to
third-
party network equipment such as modems and routers. Based on the RADIUS standard,
BorderManager
Authentication Service interoperates with all RADIUS compliant third-party devices including
equipment
from ISPs, and firewall and access server vendors such as Ascend, Bay Networks, BBN Planet,
Checkpoint, Cisco, Livingston Enterprises, Raptor, Shiva, Telebit, 3Com, UUNET Technologies
and
others.
"Easily managed, secure communications is a critical requirement for remote networking," stated
Kurt
Bauer, vice president, core product management of Ascend Communications, Inc.
"BorderManager
Authentication Service enables our customers to run Novell 4.x networks with NDS to seamlessly
integrate
user administration of the Ascend MAX, MAX TNT, and Pipeline solutions with NDS."
"BorderManager Authentication Service is proof that Novell is extending its leadership position in
the
network service market," said Michelle Arden, vice president of Novell's Border Services Group.
"By
basing BorderManager Authentication Service on the RADIUS standard and integrating with
NDS, we are
delivering what customers require by giving them low cost, easily manageable solutions that
integrate with
their existing environment and support open Internet standards."
"We have found Novell's RADIUS implementation to be an excellent product," stated Ed
Kirkpatrick,
Director of Information Technology, Madison Middle Schools, Rexburg, ID. "Being able to give
each user
rights to dial up remote access services from within Novell Administrator for Windows makes
managing
remote access easy and secure. Another benefit is the ability to selectively choose from a variety
of
protocols allowing us to work effectively in a mixed environment. Additional features in
BorderManager
Authentication Service, such as accounting, allows us to track access to our network."
BorderManager Authentication Service will include all current features of RADIUS Services for
NDS. In
addition, the new product will add cross-platform support for Windows NT Server, RADIUS
accounting
support, authorization and audit logging. Easily managed through NDS, BorderManager
Authentication
Service solves security issues by allowing network administrators to track what network services
are being
used and how long remote users are attached.
Availability
RADIUS Services for NDS is available today free of charge at

BorderManager Authentication Service will be available in early 1998.
