Novell Delivers Fast Internet Access for 67,000-Seat Utah School Network with Single Proxy Server

BorderManager FastCache Software Demonstrates Breakthrough Internet Performance on Cost-Effective Intel Processor-based Server from Dell

Provo, Utah -- January 7, 1998 -- Following last month's announcement of lab tests showing that its new BorderManager FastCache is up to 10 times more scalable than competing proxy server solutions, Novell, Inc. today announced breakthrough, real-world performance for BorderManager FastCache in a pilot program at Utah schools. UtahLINK, a state-run Internet Service Provider (ISP) serving Utah's entire public school system, is using BorderManager FastCache on a Dell PowerEdge 6100/200 server with a single 200MHz Pentium Pro processor to proxy Internet access for 67,000 client computers at hundreds of schools sites.

Unlike other vendors' proxy caches that require multiple servers to scale the Internet for their customers, Novell's BorderManager FastCache produces dramatically lower costs and higher productivity for customers by making the Internet work for thousands of users on a single Intel processor-based server.

"BorderManager FastCache allows UtahLINK to provide the Utah schools with ultra-fast response times for Web content with a lower cost-of-ownership," said Don Porter, manager of the UtahLINK network information center. "With BorderManager FastCache, we actually get better performance when filtering the Web than we would if no proxy were taking place. In addition, the huge performance bonus we get from BorderManager FastCache gives us a stable growth path that doesn't require repeated hardware upgrades. So far, no competing proxy solution has offered the same performance at even close to the same cost."

Making a Difference for Education

In addition to making Internet access more cost-effective, BorderManager FastCache has made a positive impact in Internet-related education across Utah's schools. At one school it previously took from 3 to 5 minutes for a laboratory class of 25 to 30 lab students to simultaneously access the same Web site. Response time was so slow that students had to wait 30 to 40 seconds after every mouse click. Today, after the addition of BorderManager FastCache, the entire lab can now download the same page in just a few seconds.

"With BorderManager FastCache, our teachers now see a viable time on task that really opens up the learning potential of the Internet," said Dick Lemon, director of telecommunications for Davis County schools. "It's a marvelous tool for keeping the kids on task."

Breakthrough Performance on the Intel Platform

The 67,000-user pilot program in the Utah schools reflects both the expanding power of the Intel platform to host Internet services and Novell's new leadership in intranet and Internet software. Performance highlights of the Dell and Novell server solution include:

  • Response time improvements ranging from 2 to 100 times faster
  • Over 2 million hits per school day
  • 1.5 million recently-used Web objects cached on the server with a 74% cache hit rate
  • 25,000 recently-used DNS names cached on the server
  • Server CPU utilization averaging below 45%

"Novell's BorderManager FastCache demonstrates that Intel processor-based platforms support powerful Internet software solutions," said Steve Levich, Director Enterprise ISV programs for Intel Corporation. "As a result, Novell customers can evolve their networks for Internet access without sacrificing the stability, broad industry support, and superior price-performance of Intel platforms."

As reported by the independent testing authority Mindcraft, Inc., BorderManager FastCache processes 4,055 hits per second or 350 million hits per day. BorderManager FastCache increases the responsiveness and capacity of any NT, NetWare or Unix Web server. In fact, according to Mindcraft, BorderManager FastCache scales a Sun Unix Web server more than 700 percent.
