Novell BorderManager Authentication Service Solves Remote Access User Management
Issues
New Solution Brings the Power and Convenience of NDS to RADIUS
PROVO, UT July 13, 1998 Networking software leader Novell® Inc.,
today announced the availability of BorderManager Authentication Service, a new member of the
BorderManager product family, which allows businesses to securely and efficiently manage remote
access at the network border via Novell Directory Service (NDS). BorderManager
Authentication Service gives organizations easy, secure, and central control of access to their networks,
dramatically reducing the cost of providing remote access to regional offices, branch locations, mobile
users, and tele-commuters. In addition, the new Novell solution enables organizations to further reduce
connectivity costs by outsourcing their remote access infrastructure to an Internet Service Provider (ISP)
while maintaining user control locally in NDS.
BorderManager Authentication Service, a cross-platform service from Novell, runs on NetWare®
4.x and NetWare 5 as well as Windows NT servers. BorderManager Authentication Service is based
upon the Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS) protocol which ensures interoperability
with RADIUS compliant third-party devices, including equipment from ISPs and firewall and access
server vendors. The solution builds on the RADIUS for NDS technology that Novell made freely
available in June of 1997.
"BorderManager Authentication Service is a further demonstration of the value of NDS for businesses of
all sizes," said Michelle Arden, vice president of Novell's Border Services Group. "With the tight
integration with NDS, Novell is extending the RADIUS standard to provide customers with a low cost,
easily manageable directory-enabled solution that can significantly reduce the costs of managing the
remote user".
Telegyr Systems is a leading provider of network management solutions for the economic and efficient
control of energy supply networks. "We have one hundred remote users at our San Jose site," stated Ken
Green, senior network analyst of Telegyr Systems. "BorderManager Authentication Service allows us to
securely log these remote users on our networks. Consolidating user information in NDS not only makes
managing remote users easier, but solves another expensive problem by delivering a single point of
management for our various remote access servers."
Key Features of BorderManager Authentication Service
BorderManager Authentication Service provides an unprecedented level of security, manageability and
confidence for remote network access. This Internet standards-based solution consolidates RADIUS
server data with user authentication rights and dial-in configuration information within Novell Directory
Services. The result is a single point of administration that enhances security and consolidates the
management of remote services. In addition to easy management and strong security, BorderManager
Authentication Service includes the following key features:
- Support of 3rd Party Products: As a standards based product, BorderManager
Authentication Service supports RADIUS authentication and accounting and has broad industry support,
interoperating with remote access hardware from 3Com, Ascend, Bay Networks, Checkpoint, Cisco,
Lucent (Livingston), Raptor, Shiva and others.
- Outsourcing Dial-in Infrastructure: BorderManager Authentication Service
allows companies to outsource their remote access infrastructure. Access servers, modems, leased lines
and other components can be owned and managed by an ISP, while administrative control of data and
users can be managed locally within NDS.
- Cross Platform: In addition to NetWare 4.x and NetWare 5, BorderManager
Authentication also runs natively on Microsoft Windows NT servers.
