Sun Microsystems Cofounder and Internet Pioneer Joins Networking Leader
PROVO, Utah July 28, 1998 Novell, Inc. today named Bill Joy, the
co-founder
and current vice president for research at Sun Microsystems, Inc., to the company's Board of
Directors.
"Bill Joy's appointment further validates Novell's strategic direction to provide the intelligent
Internet
infrastructure that businesses need to compete in a networked economy," said Dr. Eric Schmidt,
CEO and
chairman of the Board of Directors of Novell. "Bill Joy is, in my opinion, the foremost computer
scientist
of his generation. It will be a pleasure to work with him again in an area that we both care deeply
about:
creating networking solutions for the enterprise."
"Eric and his new team are clearly pursuing some of the most exciting opportunities in
networking," said
Joy. "Novell is way ahead of the curve in delivering distributed intelligence for business users.
I'm
delighted with the prospect of contributing to the decision making for the company."
Joy was the principal designer of the University of California, Berkeley, version of the UNIX
operating
system whose networking protocols and implementations spawned the Internet. He is currently
leading a
Sun research effort - called JINI - to expand the power of Java technology. The JINI project
focuses on
technologies that enable spontaneous networking and dramatically simplifies the access and
delivery of
network services.
He continues to be an important industry evangelist for the "open systems" model of computing,
based
on open industry standards, which maximizes flexibility and freedom of choice for network
computing
customers.
Joy's appointment to the board is the second this month for Novell. It follows the July 21
appointment to
Novell's board of Reed E. Hundt, a principal of Charles Ross Partners and former chairman of
the
Federal Communications Commission.
Joy's appointment increases Novell's board representation to eight. In addition to Schmidt,
Hundt, and
Joy, the board includes: John Young as vice chairman, the former president and chief executive
officer of
Hewlett-Packard Company; Elaine R. Bond, formerly senior vice president with chief technology
officer
responsibilities at Chase Manhattan Bank; Hans-Werner Hector, cofounder and former member
of the
advisory board of SAP, AG, Germany; Jack L. Messman, president and chairman of Union
Pacific
Resources Group Inc.; and Larry W. Sonsini, member of the law firm of Wilson, Sonsini,
Goodrich and
Rosati.
