Caching Solution Leverages NetWare 5 to Deliver 10,000 Hits per Second on a Single
Server
San Jose, CA, ISPCon September 28 Extending its leadership position in
delivering Internet solutions, Novell, Inc. today announced that BorderManager FastCache 3, the
next
generation of its caching technology, has entered controlled beta testing. BorderManager
FastCache 3, the
performance foundation of the BorderManager Enterprise Edition suite, is the industry's fastest,
most
scalable Internet caching solution for Web-enabled businesses, content publishers and Internet
Service
Providers (ISPs). BorderManager FastCache 3 is available as a stand-alone solution or as part of
the
BorderManager Enterprise Edition, Novell's complete security management suite for
NDS-enabled
networks.
Internet standards-based and Year 2000 ready, BorderManager FastCache 3 speeds user access to
popular
Web information, reduces network bandwidth requirements and accelerates any Web site. This
results in
more productive employees, lower bandwidth expenses, and a cost effective alternative to
upgrading
overburdened Web servers. BorderManager FastCache 3 provides a strong performance
foundation for
firewalls already installed in a network environment. It offloads as much as 80% of Web traffic
across an
Internet connection and can be easily integrated in any NetWare, NT, UNIX or heterogenous
network.
"With BorderManager FastCache 3, Novell continues to leverage their strengths in their cache
offering,"
commented Peter Christy, Principal at Collaborative Research, publishers of the "1998 Internet
Caching
Report". "NetWare is an ideal platform for caching, offering highly-optimized network and file
processing
running on top of commodity PC hardware. As caching grows in use, especially within company
networks,
Novell's industry-leading directory services provide an excellent means of effectively organizing
and
operating increasingly complex, security aware, distributed caches."
EOS/SpringNet is an ISP using BorderManager FastCache technology to provide accelerated
Internet
access to more than 6000 customers in Illinois. "By implementing BorderManager FastCache
technology to
accelerate our users' access to the Internet instead of purchasing more T-1 links, we have been
able to save
a considerable amount of money." stated Anthony Hopp, Principle of EOS/Spring Net,
Springfield, IL.
"The performance benefits have been outstanding and our customers are raving about the speed of
their
Internet connection."
"As enterprise customers continue to add Web servers and intranets to their global networks, the
importance of implementing caching to manage bandwidth and strengthen security, especially
within branch
offices, becomes readily apparent," stated Dave Shirk, vice president of product management,
Novell.
"ISPs can also derive tremendous benefits by improving Quality of Service and, at the same time,
significantly reduce the need and costs for further network buildout. With over 4.5 million
enterprise
customers using BorderManager FastCache technology for Internet caching, Novell has clearly
established
a leadership position in this growing Internet market space. We invite other cache vendors to
publish their
performance numbers and find out that they are 5 to 10 times slower than Novell."
New Features in BorderManager FastCache 3
Several new features have been added to this latest version of BorderManager FastCache in the
following
areas :
Increase cache hit ratio with Active Caching :
- Batch Download for Proxy Cache - allowing for preselected Web sites to be pulled into cache
at a
specified time, for example, during off-peak times.
- Pre-fetch download for proxy cache - allowing the proxy server to request embedded objects
in a page
before the browser requests them.
- Multi-level read ahead - this allows the administrator to specify 'depth' of pre-fetch.
Comprehensive Security :
- SSL authentication - uses industry standards for secure browser authentication to caching
services
- ICP security enhancements - secures hierarchical caches from intruders
- SOCKS 4 and 5 client and server support - supports firewall security mechanisms
- Single sign-on - eliminates need for multiple logins/passwords when using Novell client
software via
background authentication to Novell Directory Services (NDS)
Additional new features include:
- Transparent proxy caching - browsers do not need to be configured to use the proxy,
eliminating need
to 'touch' every browser
- Support for 100,000 active connections and over 10,000 hits per second (measured with
WebBench
1.1) - the most scalable caching server, providing an order of magnitude increase in
price/performance
than other solutions
- SNMP instrumentation and traps, with real time monitoring - integrate management with
SNMP
consoles, for example, Novell's ManageWise.
- Proxy support for SMTP/POP3, Real Audio/video, DNS, NNTP, Generic UDP& TCP and
application proxies - comprehensive proxy support
- HTTP and FTP forward and reverse proxy caching - extends caching to FTP content
- Support for NetWare 5 and NetWare 4.11 - use the fastest, most trusted data serving
platforms in the
industry
Industry Leading Proxy Cache Performance
BorderManager FastCache 3 is an easily administered caching solution that includes proxy
caching,
hierarchical network caching and Web server acceleration services. While BorderManager
FastCache v2.1
was tested at processing 4,055 hits per second, BorderManager FastCache 3 can scale to over
10,000 hits
per second. Unlike other proxy caches that require expensive hardware platforms and cache farms
to scale
the Internet, BorderManager FastCache delivers this phenomenal performance on a single Intel
Pentium II
processor. BorderManager FastCache increases the responsiveness and capacity of any NT,
NetWare or
Unix Web server. Compared to other industry solutions, Novell's caching technologies represent
a
price/value performance advantage of over ten to one. Novell, Inc. also owns the speed record for
single-processor Web server performance measured by the industry-standard SPECweb96
benchmark.
Momentum in the Industry
Novell has previously announced a caching partnership which included Digi, IBM and Tech Data.
This
partnership provides an integrated solution that speeds user access to popular Web information,
reduces
network bandwidth requirements, and accelerates any web site. The solution integrates Digi
Datafire
SYNC/570 adapters with IBM's Netfinity 325 server and Novell's BorderManager FastCache
v2.1.
Pricing and Availability
Novell will announce pricing at the time BorderManager FastCache 3 ships. The product is
currently in
controlled beta and is anticipated to ship before the end of the year. For more information on
