Novell Widens Desktop Management Lead with Directory-based ZENworks 2

New ZENworks 2 Release Includes Improved Year 2000 Solution from Greenwich Mean Time and Virus Protection from Network Associates

PROVO, Utah — June 28, 1999 — Novell, Inc. (NASDAQ:NOVL) today announced the availability of ZENworks™ 2, an enhanced version of the industry's first directory-based management solution for Microsoft Windows' desktops. ZENworks, based on Novell® Directory Services® (NDS™), eases network use for end-users and simplifies network management for technical professionals by basing network management on customized digital profiles of individual users. As a result, users are free to access their familiar interface and applications securely from anywhere on the network, while network professionals can centrally manage desktops on even the largest, most complex and geographically distributed networks.

New features in ZENworks 2 include the ability to take inventory of hardware and software over the network, expanded capabilities for distributing software to networks across the enterprise and the Internet, and enhanced remote management of desktops and users. In addition, ZENworks 2 includes Year 2000 diagnostic and repair tools from Greenwich Mean Time and anti-virus software from Network Associates (NASDAQ:NETA) that work with NDS to help companies automate and speed the process of checking their networked desktops for Year 2000 problems, computer viruses, Web attacks and e-mail intrusions.

The rapid growth in ZENworks deployments has contributed to Novell's fast-growing business ecosystem of customers, application developers and solutions and services providers. This has coincided with the success of Novell's directory-enabled NetWare® 5 platform and NDS. Backed by Novell's extensive consulting, technical support, and education programs, ZENworks customers are using its directory-based tool set in businesses of every kind and size, from wide-area networks with tens of thousands of desktops to small and mid-sized networks where efficient network management, improved internal support services, and expanded user access are at a premium.

"One of the primary challenges we face is dealing with end-users' changes and customization," said Judd Feinman of Realtech Systems Corp, a premier network integrator based in Manhattan with offices throughout the Northeast. "Since ZENworks is based on NDS, we can set policies for all users that help us to control and maintain each desktop. We can even lock down the desktops to ensure users don't add potential problems to the network, such as Year 2000 bugs."

"ZENworks 2 simplifies life on the network for both the network professional and end user, but it also helps businesses of every kind save money managing desktops," said Samm DiStasio, director of marketing for Novell. "User and desktop management is the most expensive part of maintaining a computer network, and ZENworks is proven to dramatically reduce those network costs."

Industry-leading Vendor Solutions Further Enhance ZENworks

Novell has built relationships with industry-leading vendors to further enhance desktop management with a Year 2000 diagnostic solution and virus protection. ZENworks 2 includes a five-user version of Greenwich Mean Time's award-winning Year 2000 diagnostic and repair tool, Check 2000 version 3.11, which deploys an automatic fix across the network, taking full advantage of ZENworks' ability to "push" fixes to each desktop electronically. For problems that must be addressed manually, Check 2000 provides instructions based on independently researched and expert advice on resolving Y2K issues.

Network Associate's VirusScan is also included with ZENworks 2 to automate protection against viruses and other intrusions. The advanced Secure Cast feature automatically provides users with software updates over a six-month period. As new viruses such as "Melissa" are discovered, Secure Cast uses the Internet to send the corresponding updates and reminders to network administrators and users.

Pricing and Availability

ZENworks 2 is available from Novell beginning this week for $59 per user. With any size ZENworks purchase, customers will receive a free five-user version of Greenwich Mean Time's Check 2000.
