Controlling User Connections to Your Server

You might want to control connections to the News Server if you will be performing maintenance tasks on your server. The following are examples of when you might choose to control connections for maintenance:

• To renumber the active file, you can specify read-only access (no posts, no feeds).
• If you need to shut down the server for some reason, you can disable newsreader connections. Users already connected to the server are allowed to finish their tasks.
• If you want to control your News Server's content, you can prevent the server from replicating discussion groups with other servers.

To specify the type of connections to control:

1. From the General Administration page, click the News Server server name button > Server Preferences > Connection Control.

2. Check Reject New Articles for This Reason if you do not want users and other servers to post articles to your server.

   Users can still connect to your server to read articles.

3. In the Reject New Articles for This Reason field, type an explanation for the rejection.

   The text you type is sent to any user who attempts to connect to your server while the connections are disabled.

4. Check Reject Reader Connection for This Reason if you do not want users to connect to the server.

   Servers can still connect to send articles.

5. In the Reject Reader Connections for This Reason field, type an explanation for the rejection.

   The text you type is sent to any user who attempts to connect to your server while the connections are disabled.

6. Click OK.
