Controlling Access to Your Server

After you decide what type of access control your server requires (refer to Planning Your News Server) perform the tasks that correspond to the appropriate level of access control. The following list outlines the tasks necessary to set up access control for your server and discussion groups. Only perform those tasks that correspond to the determined level of access control.

  1. Enable access control.

For more information on access control, refer to Understanding How Access Control Works.

  2. Define the users and groups who will access your server.

If you are using Novell® Directory Services® (NDS)TM, you can use the users and groups you have already defined.

  3. Define and manage the roles that determine the type of access a user has to a particular discussion group or discussion group hierarchy.
  4. Specify access control rules (for LDAP and local directory users only).
  5. Delegate discussion group management tasks if appropriate (for LDAP and local directory users only).

With NDS, only the News Server administrator can manage discussion groups.
