4.1 Upgrading Retain 4.7 to 4.8

Use the instructions in the following sections to upgrade from Retain 4.7 to 4.8.

4.1.1 Prerequisites

Performing a successful upgrade requires that you

  • Are Running Retain 4.7 with an Optimized Index: To upgrade your system to Retain 4.8, it must be running Retain 4.7 with an index that has been optimized at least once.

By default, Retain optimizes its index at 1 a.m. every Sunday morning.

To check whether your system’s index has been optimized since upgrading to version 4.7, see the Maintenance tab, Last Index Optimization date/time stamp.

  • Provide Owner Rights to the SQL Database: Retain must have database owner rights to the SQL database it is connected to in order to update the schema and so on.

  • Allow Adequate Time: When updating very large (~ 1 TB) databases, the upgrade might take up to two hours to complete.

  • Back Up the System: Just prior to starting the upgrade, back up the Retain System. See Backing Up Retain.

  • Ensure Adequate Disk Space: Temporary files for updating the index can consume up to double the index’s current disk space during the upgrade.

4.1.2 If you Need to Optimize Your 4.7 Index

IMPORTANT:Retain’s Index Optimization process starts Maintenance mode, which blocks Retain access until it completes (usually about 10 minutes). Access is then restored, and index optimization continues in the background.

Optimization should take no more than 8 hours to complete, at which point the Last Index Optimization date on the Maintenance tab changes, and you can upgrade to 4.8.

If your 4.7 index hasn’t been optimized since upgrading to version 4.7, you can force an optimization by doing one of the following:

If You Are Running 4.7.0.1 (Patched)

  1. Using your web browser, log in to Retain.

  2. In the left navigation bar, click Server Configuration.

  3. Select the Maintenance tab.

  4. Under Maintenance/Caching, click the Optimize Now button.

The Last Index Optimization date/time stamp changes to In Process.

  5. When the Last Index Optimization date/time stamp displays the completion date and time, continue with Upgrading to Retain 4.8.

If You Are Running 4.7.0 (Unpatched)

  1. Archive new data or delete existing data. This primes the system for Index Optimization.

  2. Using your web browser, log in to Retain.

  3. In the left navigation bar, click Server Configuration.

  4. Select the Maintenance tab.

  5. Make sure that Enable Index Optimization is selected.

  6. Change the day to when you want the optimization to run.

  7. Change the Run maintain procedure at to the desired start time.

When the optimization process begins, the Last Index Optimization date/time stamp changes to In Process.

  8. When the Last Index Optimization date/time stamp displays the completion date and time, continue with Upgrading to Retain 4.8.

4.1.3 Upgrading to Retain 4.8
