Primary Identity System

You can use one of the following as your primary identity system for File Reporter:

  • An Active Directory forest
  • A NetIQ eDirectory tree

Active Directory as the Primary Identity System

  • The File Reporter Engine server must be in the Active Directory domain.
  • File Reporter supports a minimum forest functional level of Windows 2003 or later in native mode.

NetIQ eDirectory as the Primary Identity System

If you want File Reporter to report on storage devices that reside in Active Directory:

  • The File Reporter Engine server must be part of a domain.
  • File Reporter supports a minimum forest functional level of Windows 2003 or later in native mode.

Database

File Reporter uses a Microsoft SQL Server database or a PostgreSQL database as the back-end data store.

Microsoft SQL Server Database

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2012, 2014.
  • Hardware and software requirements: See the Microsoft SQL Server documentation.
  • Disk space: Estimate 2 KB per file system entry.
  • Recommended: Use a dedicated SQL Server instance to prevent conflicts with other vendor software.

PostgreSQL Database

  • PostgreSQL (delivered with File Reporter)
  • Disk space: Minimum of 350 MB
  • Depending on the size and frequency of your scans, you may need significantly more disk space.
  • Recommended: Use a dedicated PostgreSQL cluster to prevent conflicts with other vendor software.

Windows

Supported operating systems for the SQL Server database or the PostgreSQL database:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Microsoft Windows 7, 8 workstation

Hardware requirements:

  • Architecture: 64-bit (x64) multi-core processor.
  • Memory: Minimum of 8 GB RAM.
  • Depending on the size and frequency of your scans, you may need significantly more RAM.

Linux

Supported operating systems for the PostgreSQL database:

  • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11, 11 SP1, 11 SP2, 11 SP3
  • Novell Open Enterprise Server 11, 11 SP1, 11 SP2

Hardware requirements:

  • Architecture: 64-bit (x64) multi-core processor.
  • Memory: Minimum of 8 GB RAM.
  • Depending on the size and frequency of your scans, you may need significantly more RAM.

File Reporter Engine

Windows

  • Supported operating systems:
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2
    • Microsoft Windows 7, 8 workstation
  • Hardware requirements:
    • Architecture: 64-bit (x64) multi-core processor.
    • Memory: Minimum of 16 GB RAM.
    • Depending on the size and frequency of your scans, you may need significantly more RAM.
    • Disk space: 350 MB for the engine; 700 MB for both the engine and PostgreSQL. Depending on the size and frequency of your scans, you may need significantly more disk space.
  • You can install Microsoft SQL Server or PostgreSQL on the same server, but you get better performance if you install the database on a different server.
  • If possible, do not install File Reporter Engine on an Active Directory domain controller.

In Active Directory network environments, File Reporter can report on the contents of Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices through a File Reporter Agent proxy assignment.

  • EMC Celerra
  • NetApp filer
  • EMC Isilon
  • EMC Isilon, clustered using SmartConnect mode
  • Hitachi NAS Platform

Other NAS devices have not been tested, but might be able to report to File Reporter with a generic device description attribute. For more information, click here.
