VERITAS Software Redefines Data Protection for NetWare

VERITAS Software Provides Unprecedented Reliability and Efficient Disaster Recovery
With the Release of VERITAS Backup Exec for NetWare

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – October 18, 1999 –

VERITASâ Software Corporation (Nasdaq: VRTS), the industry’s leading enterprise-class application storage management software provider, today announced a major new release of VERITAS Backup Exec™ for Novell® NetWare®. Key new features to VERITAS Backup Exec for NetWare version 8.5 include Tape Mirror, Quick Check, integration with VERITAS Global Data Manager™, enhanced Intelligent Disaster Recovery tools and support for open files on NetWare 5 servers. Version 8.5 of VERITAS Backup Exec for NetWare redefines NetWare data protection by offering customers increased functionality to protect, access and manage business-critical information.

"Once again, VERITAS Software has demonstrated its dedication to providing NetWare customers with an innovative storage management solution for Novell NetWare," said Michael Bryant, director of NetWare product marketing, Novell, Inc. "NetWare customers demand superior level data protection services for their directory-enabled, mission-critical systems, and the new VERITAS Software product allows our customers to continue to leverage their investments in the directory space."

As a leading backup solution for NetWare 5 and Novell Storage Services (NSS), VERITAS Backup Exec for NetWare provides reliable, high-performance and easy-to-use backups for NetWare users. Reliability is enhanced with VERITAS Backup Exec for NetWare’s new Tape Mirror feature, which provides users the ability to target a single backup job to multiple tape drives simultaneously. Users can keep one tape on-site and send the duplicate to an off-site storage location for safekeeping. Additionally, Tape Mirror provides full redundancy. In the event a tape drive fails, the backup completes successfully on the other drives. VERITAS Backup Exec for NetWare’s new Quick Check feature offers an automated periodic check to ensure the data is reliably put on the tape and available for restore. Quick Check also validates that the customer’s hardware is working correctly.

"Backing up is no longer viewed as optional in companies today. It is well recognized that lost data exacts an expensive toll in lost production time and inexcusable amounts of lost revenue," said Richard L. Ptak, Vice President, Systems and Applications Management, Hurwitz Group, Inc. "The first vendor to offer a data protection solution that offers customers support for NetWare 5 will enjoy significant success as it provides a key component to protecting critical data in this growing market."

"VERITAS Backup Exec for NetWare is a comprehensive data protection solution providing the latest backup and restore technology for quickly, reliably and simply protecting NetWare server data," said Michael Colemere, vice president of product management, VERITAS Software. "The integration with VERITAS Global Data Manager is yet another integration point between the backup product lines, ensuring business without interruption from the data center to the desktop."

VERITAS Global Data Manager (GDM) was originally created to allow enterprises to manage VERITAS NetBackup™ instances located anywhere in the world. When integrated with VERITAS Backup Exec for NetWare, GDM allows centralized monitoring of multiple VERITAS Backup Exec for NetWare, VERITAS Backup Exec for Windows NT and VERITAS NetBackup servers. Through GDM’s Activity Monitor feature, users may view active, scheduled and completed backup, restore and file-grooming jobs, as well as abort active VERITAS Backup Exec for NetWare jobs. With GDM’s Device Monitor feature, users have the ability to manage VERITAS Backup Exec for NetWare devices and alerts associated with those devices.

Improving upon the only Novell ‘Yes Tested and Approved’ disaster recovery solution for NetWare 5, the VERITAS Backup Exec for NetWare Intelligent Disaster Recovery Option now includes support for system recovery using diskettes, CD-ROM or Hewlett-Packard’s One Button Disaster Recoveryä (OBDR). Using OBDR, an administrator simply boots the server directly from the HP tape drive and restores the data. With OBDR or CD-ROM based disaster recovery, users can insert a single piece of media to perform the complete disaster recovery. Additionally, VERITAS Backup Exec for NetWare Intelligent Disaster Recovery Option now supports Novell Storage Services (NSS) providing administrators with the capability to quickly and reliably recreate and recover entire NSS volumes.
