Concentrico Fills Need for GroupWise Users, Innovates with Novell NDS eDirectory

Orem, Utah,  05 March 2001 — Concentrico Inc., a custom services and software provider, will unveil version 1.0 of Reach™ for NDS, GroupWise Edition at Novell, Inc.’s Brainshare® 2001 technical conference.  The software is the first in a series of planned product releases that help users manage contact information using Novell® NDS® eDirectory™ technology in collaboration environments such as Novell GroupWise® and Microsoft Exchange®.

Traditionally, directories are used to manage information about corporate users, yet companies like Concentrico are finding directory technology to be well suited for other tasks.  “Novell’s eDirectory is more feature-rich than a traditional database, and for certain kinds of data – such as information about people – it has no equal”, notes Brian Kirkby, the company’s CTO.  “With the release of Novell DirXML, powerful data sharing and synchronization software, Novell has further extended the value of eDirectory.  DirXML provides exactly the capabilities needed to successfully manage data stored in directories, databases and directories in a very streamlined fashion”, he added.

Kirkby specifically referred to eDirectory’s scalability, its indexing ability, and its robust API.  “The strengths of Novell’s eDirectory make it a natural choice as the backend to our product”, he concluded.

And how does Novell view Concentrico’s “non-traditional” use of eDirectory?  “We think it’s great.  Concentrico has shown just how powerful eDirectory can be,” said Tracy Thayne, Novell’s Director of Global Program Marketing.  “Reach for NDS and Concentrico’s other products fit nicely into Novell’s One Net strategy.  We expect to see more great things from Concentrico.”  Tay Kratzer, one of Novell’s foremost GroupWise experts, added “Reach for NDS is the first out of the box solution to allow administrators to easily create eDirectory solutions for end-users.  Finally there's an easy, administrator-controlled way to allow end-users to add information to the company directory.”

Reach for NDS is intended to act as a “meta directory” – a master list of all the people and organizations a company deals with, including vendors, partners, customers, and other “external” contacts.  The meta directory data is stored directly in eDirectory, and can be easily synchronized with other directories, databases or applications in the company by way of DirXML™,– a feature Reach’s competitors lack on every account.

Concentrico is slated to release an entire series of DirXML drivers in the coming months, allowing Reach for NDS customers to share important data and information between eDirectory and their line of business applications.  These new drivers allow Reach for NDS customers to easily benefit from this powerful feature.

Reach for NDS has a very simple interface, and Kendell Sorensen, Concentrico’s Director of Marketing, is quick to point out that it contains exactly the features sought after by typical collaboration users.  “We are very proud of the fact that decisions about what Reach for NDS would be and do were completely driven by customer demand”, he said.  “Reach for NDS gives the customers what they want.  Nothing more, nothing less.”

Concentrico intends to market the product to a wide variety of potential customers.  One key market segment is the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME).  “The small business arena is a huge untapped market”, said Sean Kirkby, Concentrico’s president and chief executive.  “Sophisticated solutions such as a meta directory typically carry a cost of ownership that prices them out of the small business market.  But because of Novell’s eDirectory, coupled with our own innovations, an affordable enterprise-class solution is available to the SME market.  We intend to exploit this opportunity.”

Kirkby added that Concentrico is geared to market aggressively to the traditional enterprise market as well as the SME market.  “We can’t bring big-business solutions to the SME market if our products don’t solve big-business problems”, he said.

Concentrico will be showcasing Reach for NDS at Novell’s Brainshare 2001 technical conference in Salt Lake City, UT.
